No arrest in 2006 murder

By Gina Childress | Times Staff Writer

Who murdered a 42-year-old woman five years ago still remains a mystery to investigators.

Police were called to 409-A S. Pender St. at 4:18 p.m. Jan. 10, 2006, where they found Joann Cynthia Anderson dead.

An autopsy was performed on Anderson, and the cause of death was listed as "manual strangulation."

The Pender Street duplex where Anderson's body was found was abandoned.

Police said at the time of her death the duplex was used as a hangout for drugs and prostitution.

According to police records at the time of the murder, Anderson did not have a permanent address. However, she did have a history of prostitution and drugs, investigators said.

But just because she had that history doesn't mean her murder wasn't an important case to investigate, officials said.

Requests for information from the community did not result in any leads that have led to an arrest. Even though it has been five years, detectives say they still would like to bring closure to the case and charge the person or persons responsible.

Officials say that sometimes, as time passes, people who may have information become more inclined to talk or the person or persons responsible become complacent and mention something to a friend or relative. They say even what someone may consider a small, insignificant piece of information could be the missing link they need to solve the case.

Anyone who may have knowledge or information about the murder is asked to contact the Wilson Police Department at 399-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 243-2255.

The Wilson Times has partnered with the Wilson Police Department profiling a series of unsolved murders dating back to 1997 and leading up to the present. This series, "Cold Case Files," will feature one case a week until the end of April. Investigators hope by bringing attention to these cases once again, they may be able to bring closure to a family.
