January shooting death still unsolved

Wilson police are still searching for the person or persons responsible for the shooting death of Omar Shariff Harris in January.

Harris was shot and killed at his Rasberry Drive Home just after 8 p.m. on Jan. 4. Investigators have not arrested anyone and have remained tight-lipped about the details as they have conducted an around-the-clock investigation into his death.

Police said there was another person at the residence at the time of the killing.

"There was a female witness on the scene at the time of the shooting who was assaulted during the incident,” said Sgt. John Slaughter, police spokesman.

She has since recovered from her injury that was not considered to be serious.

One neighbor in the Creekside subdivision, who declined to be identified because of fear of his safety, said the night of the shooting he heard a noise and went outside to investigate. He told police he saw two people in the backyard of Harris’ home.

Family and friends of Harris in the days following his death tried to make sense of the killing. In an interview just days after the shooting, Deloris Harris, Harris’ aunt said her nephew always played the lottery and seemed to be very lucky. She said he would always share his winnings with his friends and family.

Vivian Armstrong described her son as always joking around and outgoing.

She said he never met a stranger and had a pleasant personality.

Police have spent the last five months following up on leads and conducting interviews and continue to ask for the public’s help in solving this murder.

If anyone has any information about the murder of Omar Shariff Harris, they are asked to contact the Wilson Police Department at 399-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 243-2255. If a tip is called in to Crime Stoppers, the person doesn’t not have to identify themselves. However, to be eligible for any potential reward, a name will have to be given.
