Sunday, February 20, 2011 11:04 PM Hope survives after woman vanishes 9 years ago By Gina Childress | Times Staff Writer It has been almost nine years since anyone has seen or heard from then 38-year-old Dorothy Mae Hendricks. Police said her family reported Hendricks missing on Dec. 13, 2002 -- eight days after nobody heard anything from her. Investigators at the time of her disappearance said she had an "unstable lifestyle," and that while it was not unusual for her to turn up missing, it was unusual for her not to maintain some sort of contact with relatives. "It is like her to stay gone, according to family members," said police officials at the time of their investigation. "But she always calls back in." Just days after Christmas in 2002, Fannie Conyers, Hendricks' mother, said she thought for sure she would see her daughter at Christmas, but she never showed up and they have never heard from her again. Hendricks' family told investigators she left her apartment and "caught a ride" to Trade Mart No. 11, which was located near the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Ward Boulevard on Dec. 5, 2002. The last reported sighting of Hendricks was around 8 p.m. on the day she disappeared in the 100 block of Tuskegee Street, which is near the store where she was dropped off by an unnamed person. Investigators said they spoke with the person who dropped her off at the store but have no reason to believe they were involved. In 2002, Hendricks was described as a black female with curly black hair and brown eyes. She was 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighed around 170 pounds. She was last seen wearing a black and white sweater, blue jeans and black boots.
Investigators have never given up hope of finding out what happened to Hendricks and continue to review the case. I believe they have found more young ladies out on seven bridges road and the surrounding area... someone may want to check with the Rocky Mount PD or the Edgecombe SD. Just a thought.
