Explore the Poles in Raleigh RALEIGH -- The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences has partnered with NASA and Passport to Knowledge (P2K) to host Polar-palooza. The free event will be held May 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 25 from noon to 9 p.m. For the last eight months, science centers all across the nation have held Polar-palooza celebrations to commemorate the International Polar Year (IPY 2007-2008) and to promote an awareness of how climate changes affect the Poles and the rest of the planet. One of the highlights of this exciting and educational weekend is a series of presentations and demonstrations from people who know the Poles the best. Stories from a Changing Planet is comprised of a team of 36 experts -- ice researchers, geologists, oceanographers, climate scientists, biologists and Arctic residents living on the coast or in the Alaskan interior. Four will be on hand at the museum to discuss everything from why the Poles are melting, climate change, the state of the penguin, arctic lakes and changes and mostly, why we should care. All four floors of the museum will be transformed into a polar paradise of exhibits and activities on topics such as bird migration, polar fossils, snow and ice chemistry, astronomy and global climate; not to mention spectacular photography and HD video presentations. Kids of all ages can enjoy the "Penguin Shuffle" (a race with eggs on their feet) to win a prize and get their picture taken in an arctic environment all dressed up in parkas and other arctic gear. Several arctic animals such as lynxes and arctic foxes will be on display on Bicentennial Plaza to show how these animals relate to animals in our state. Other plaza activities include solar viewing with the Raleigh Astronomy Club, a take-home activity for the kids called, "Build Your Own Polar Animal," and a carbon footprint activity on pollution. Visitors can also enjoy food vendors and live Scandinavian music and dancing from the Triangle Spelmanslag. Name: WDT BRIDES BABIES; Color: Black; Ad Number: 52215
