Playhouse result of a promise

There's a new playhouse in town, and this one was built as a benefit for the American Cancer Society.

Teresa Jones and her husband, Rusty Jones; son, Brandon; and in-laws, Russell and Marie Jones, are building Wilson's latest playhouse. The structure will be raffled off at Relay for Life, with the proceeds going to Relay for Life as well.

Building the playhouse was Russell Jones' idea. After last year's Relay for Life, he made a promise to build the playhouse in honor of his wife, a breast cancer survivor.

"Before Relay ended last year, he said that if he was still well he was going to do a playhouse this year in her honor, and since he was in good health, he kept his promise," said Teresa Jones, who's chairperson for this year's Relay.

Russell Jones says that honoring his wife is the most rewarding aspect to building the playhouse.

"Being able to do it for my wife and the other ones in Relay for Life is the most rewarding part," Russell Jones said.

According to Teresa Jones, "the theme is 'celebrate life,'" and the playhouse's colors and appearance reflect that.

"The playhouse is white with purple shutters, a pink door and a lime green inside," Teresa Jones said. "The purple represents all cancers, the pink is breast cancer, and the green represents leukemia. That's why we chose those colors."

Construction on the playhouse began about a month and a half ago.

"It took two weeks, working off-and-on," Russell Jones said. "I built it on a Friday afternoon and a Saturday, but everybody had a job to do, and they came in separate days. The electrician and the roofers had to come in, the insulating people and the siding people had to come."

Due to the community support, the Joneses were able to build the playhouse without emptying their bank account.

"People donated labor and products so we didn't have any cost at all for the playhouse. It's wonderful," Teresa Jones said.

Although this is the first time the family has built a playhouse, they have been active in Relay for Life for four years.

The Jones family and their friends have a team at Relay for Life, "Guardian Angels." They have been active in the event since 2004, a year after Marie Jones found out she had breast cancer.

Materials for the playhouse were donated by Garrison Evans Lumber, Mark Penny DryWall, Decks by Rusty, Carpets by David, House of Lights, Brantley Electric, Brian Ansley Siding, Ray's Roofing, Mozingo Insulation and Kingsmill Homes.

RAFFLE TICKETS FOR THE PLAYHOUSE ARE $2 EACH. YOU CAN PURCHASE ONE AT RELAY FOR LIFE, OR CALL 230-6412.
