Shiveler-Merrick

Katherine Elizabeth Merrick of Raleigh and Doug Michael Shiveler of Chesapeake, Va., were united in marriage at five o’clock in the afternoon Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Wilson. The Rev. Robert Eric Bergland officiated.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Howell Merrick of Wilson. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hester Leroy Carter Sr. of Warner Robins, Ga., and Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Hudsbeth Merrick of Lamesa, Texas. Katherine graduated from James B. Hunt High School. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and her Master of Accounting degree from North Carolina State University. Just prior to the marriage, she was a senior audit associate with Grant Thornton LLP in Raleigh.

The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Lee Shiveler of Vero Beach, Fla. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Sheaff of Cambridge, N.Y., and Mabel Shiveler and the late George H. Shiveler of Mickleton, N.J. Doug is a graduate of Leesville High School in Raleigh and North Carolina State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Management. Doug is a sales representative with Supreme Orthopedics.

The bride was escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents. She wore an ivory silk satin gown by Ramona Keveza featuring a graceful sweetheart neckline, ruched bodice and a softly fitted A-line skirt sweeping into a chapel length train. The bride’s full-length veil was trimmed with beaded French Alencon lace complementing the beaded lace cap sleeves she wore for the service. She carried a bouquet of white hydrangeas, garden roses and dusty miller eucalyptus berries.

Kelly Carter Merrick, sister of the bride, of Raleigh, served as maid of honor. Bridesmaids included Heather Marie Carter, cousin of the bride, of Kathleen, Ga.; Ginger Price Gamble of Winston-Salem; Lauren Ida Ginsberg of Raleigh; and Allyson Leigh Shiveler, sister of the groom, of Raleigh.

Derek Ryan Baldy of Wilmington served as best man. Groomsmen included Scott Raymond Helfrich of Raleigh; Wallace Bryant Long of Henrico; Jess Howell Merrick, brother of the bride, of Wilson; and Clarence Scott Spragins of Durham. Tyler Loren Burch, Zachary Hartman Henderson and Steven Douglas Squires, all of Raleigh, served as ushers.

Register attendant was Molly White Wood of Herndon, Va. Program attendants were Mary Michelle Myers of Greensboro and Michelle Nicole Beracha of Laramie, Wyo.

Starlette Thomas Walston served as wedding director, assisted by Elvia Little Lucas and Princie King Evans,

Wedding music was provided by Jennifer Hudson Gay, Joel Benjamin Gay, First United Methodist Ensemble Choir (Cary Tennis, Barksdale Thompson, Ruth Hammock, Jo Shackelford, Janet Bennett, Coley Hunt Rhodes, Brad Shackelford, Lawrence Bradley, Joel Gay and Buck Newton) accompanist Jessica Satterfield and Tim Hudson, trumpet.

Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the Wilson Country Club, hosted by the bride’s parents.

On the eve of the wedding, the groom’s parents hosted a rehearsal dinner at Quince — A Southern Bistro in Wilson. Earlier in the day, a bridal luncheon was held at the home of Marla Parker with co-hosts Mary Lee Carter, Lois Merrick, Jessica Satterfield and Rosalie Bissette. Groomsmen and ushers enjoyed a golf outing at Willow Springs Country Club.

Following a honeymoon to the Exuma Islands, the couple will make their home in Chesapeake.

 

Pre-nuptial events

A surprise engagement celebration was held at the Capital City Club in Raleigh on the night of their engagement, Dec. 3, hosted by friends and family.

A bridal shower honoring Katherine was held at the home of Barbara Clark on Oct. 13, with co-hosts Nora Finch, Cindy Price, Dee Warrick and Beth White.
