Saint-Gobain holds health and safety day By Laura Keeter | Daily Times Staff Writer Saint-Gobain Containers, the glass manufacturing plant on Firestone Parkway, celebrated on Thursday the company's third International Environment, Health & Safety Day with various events. The day promotes the importance of the environment, health and safety within Saint-Gobain, and engages all employees in the drive toward achieving the company's global EHS goals, according to a corporate press release. Various events, most of which were held outside on the plant grounds, included activities focused around healthy living, safety at the workplace and home, fire safety, security, weather safety and recycling. Some vendors were Wilson Immediate Care for blood pressure and health indicators, Leigh Safety Shoes on footwear and proper fit, Humana for wellness and healthy lifestyles, chiropractic care, and EHS information. The plant also gave employees a meal and T-shirts. As a manufacturer of glass containers for the food and beverage industries, Saint-Gobain Containers is also celebrating the glass container industry's 400th anniversary in the U.S., where it operates 14 manufacturing facilities, a machine shop and distribution center. Since its beginning in Jamestown, Va., in 1608, glass continues to be made from domestically abundant, naturally occurring minerals, is one of the safest packaging materials available, and is 100 percent recyclable. An estimated 80 percent of recovered glass containers are made into new glass bottles, and the FDA has announced glass is "GRAS" or Generally Regarded As Safe. Using recycled glass, called cullet, in the manufacturing process saves raw materials and lessens the demand for energy. If recycled glass is available, it can be substituted for up to 70 percent of raw materials in the glass making process.
