Democrats building momentum
SLOB draws 100-plus

President Barack Obama needs time to finish the job he started in 2008, Wilson County Democratic leaders said at a Monday fundraiser.

Party officials said Obama took the White House as the nation teetered on the brink of recession and struggled with the strain of two Middle East wars. Leading the United States to full recovery in a single term, they said, would be superhuman.

"It would take a miracle to do it in three years,” A.P. Coleman, Wilson city councilman, said. "Anybody who could do it in three years, they need to go to heaven and sit on the right hand of God. It’s going to take all of us to do it. It’s going to take both sides of the aisle, and I hope the general public demands that.”

The Wilson County Democratic Party held its 25th Silver Lake Oyster Bar Hot Air Fellowship fundraiser Monday at the Silver Lake restaurant south of Wilson. Former Gov. Jim Hunt echoed Coleman’s sentiments about the daunting task Obama has faced.

"It’s amazing how many people have forgotten what it was like,” Hunt said. "The Republicans, just like they’ve done in the ‘20s and ‘30s, had brought us to our knees, brought us almost to the point of a depression.”

Obama, the former governor said, began the uphill trudge of economic recovery despite the nation losing 750,000 jobs in the month he was inaugurated president.

"This country is now beginning to come back,” Hunt said. "It takes a while, and we are doing it.”

Democrats dined on seafood and shook hands with local and state candidates at the fundraiser, an annual event that returned for 2012 after a two-year hiatus.

Party members hold the event "to have some comradeship among Democrats,” said event co-chairman Dewey Sheffield, a member of the N.C. Democratic Party’s executive committee.

"It’s kind of like a pep rally,” Sheffield said. "It builds enthusiasm.”

Organizers hope the fundraiser, colloquially known as the SLOB, becomes a regional rally for Democrats seeking donations and grassroots momentum as they prepare for general elections in November.

"It’s a Wilson County event,” Sheffield said. "Our plans now are to make it an eastern North Carolina event.”

Democratic candidates on hand Monday evening included Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, June Atkinson, who is running for superintendent of public instruction, N.C. Court of Appeals Judge Sam J. Ervin IV, who is seeking a state Supreme Court seat, and Court of Appeals Judges Cressie Thigpen and Wanda Bryant.

Organizers said nearly 100 patrons were in attendance. Information on the amount of money raised for the county Democratic Party was not immediately available.

Party officials recently revealed that they had been swindled of about $1,400 after forged checks stolen from the former treasurer’s home were cashed. Stantonsburg police charged 53-year-old Daniel Ray Wilson with breaking and entering, larceny, forgery and uttering a forged instrument in the theft.

Democrats settled with BB&T for about half of the amount stolen and can collect restitution from Wilson. The county party since has appointed a new treasurer.

Attendees like Phil Valera and his wife, Deborah Baro, said they participated in the fundraiser to support local and state Democratic candidates.

"We’ve got to get local officials elected as well as our national ones,” Valera said. "Our state is such a mess with the Republican Party takeover. What a disaster!”

Baro said candidates like Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney don’t inspire confidence and set poor examples for America’s youth.

"They end up nominating people who are in conflict with the values that they state,” Baro said of Republicans. "It’s absolutely mind-boggling.”

As if things were not bad enough here at home the failed foreign policies of President Obama has the USA boiling in a cauldrin of hate and disrespect all over the globe. The only thing that is preventing the same actions here at home is our second amendment rights. The Japanese confessed that the reason they did not invade our shores in 1941 was because of armed citizens. First amendment rights are important but can not convince these people with words. Obama has said that we "cling to our guns and bibles" if he gets his way our guns will be gone. With the large contingent of Muslims in this country what do you think prevents them from riots, murder and flag burning? American diplomats have been murdered, 9/11 celebrated and troops placed in harms way by Obama's apologetic discoarse. If this country has ever needed a new president it is NOW!

trend not there said...

There has to be a trend in three years showing we are going in the right direction. We didn't ask for superhuman efforts, but did ask for use to be better off now than we were in 2008. It didn't happen and he broke promises made. Anyone voting for Obama is only following party lines which to me is the biggest disrespect to those who fight for our freedom. Come on people, think for yourself! Use your head instead of following a party or god forbid someone's race. And thank God Romney is successful, powerful corporate leader and wealthy. We want a poor unsuccessful President?? And I think Romney and his wife would bring a little class back to the Whitehouse as well.

You answered your own question when you wrote (He) was unable. If you blame the horrors that people live through, what have you accomplished? You can't erase the horrors. The alcohol your father drank only made a bad situation worse. It was his life and his choice. When a person drinks to the point they become addicted, satisfying their addiction becomes the most important thing to them. Now, if you wish to call a self inflicted addiction a sickness, then your father (to you) was sick. As I stated earlier, alcohol has no legs and no will of its own, people do! I am truly sorry that your fathers life ended the way you described. In the end it really doesn't matter what I think does it?

More than $10 is taken for healthcare premiums per month - and this amount is sure to rise. I do not pay monthly premiums for family coverage (am a widowed retiree). Do not complain about family coverage. Presumably, you planned on having a family and knew it would cost a small bundle. That was your choice. I chose not to have children and instead, teach them and voluntarily work to support others' kids. I was better off under Democrats.

you got 1 perecent. exactly how much did you get under the former democratic majority four the previous four years? answer. Zero. and with our state like our country almost broke is it too much to ask you to pay 10 dollars a month towards your insurance premiums?most working people dont get 100 percent paid insurance anymore and most family and dependent plans are no contributed to at all by employers. most retirement plans are being replaced by 401ks and the like and not 100 percent employer paid. most of us pay out the nose for our own and dependent coverage with thousands of dollars of co-pays and co-insurance. as a whole stae employees are pretty well covered for the amount of benfits they pay for and what they get in return compared to the average working man or woman. many people never had to pay for premiums or contribute towards their retirement until this economy got so bad and we have to compete with a world market leading many companies to go overseas to save cost and avoid greedy unions like the chicago teachers unions and the car company unions that bankrupted the american car companies. i feel so sad for you when you have to pay 10 dollars a month towards your stae health insurance and i have to pay over 600 a month for my family and my coverage with BCBS which has a 2500 deductible 25/50 co pay on primary and sepeciaists care and 1500 co -insurance per family memeber per year.

You asked what kind of pay raise? I'm a retired teacher - retirees did not get the 2% raise you got. We got a 1% increase along with premiums we now pay for state health insurance (never had to pay for premium employee or retiree coverage until Republicans took control. Health insurance co-pays have risen under Republican control. The office staff in the dematologist's office last week was incredulous that our state plan requires a $70 co-pay when seeing a specialist. And this was a dr's office in Bethesda, Maryland - the wealthiest community in the country! They actually felt sorry for me and waived the co-pay. Apparently, some NC teachers are unaware or too busy to keep up with the real facts. Democrats have my vote while Republicans unfortunately control NC state retirees' wallets. Adding to the indignity, Republicans boast they haven't raised taxes (they never talk about the extra fees, co-pays, etc).

I address these comments to (educate yourself). I probably have and have had as many drunks in my family as you. The difference is I call them drunks and you call them sick. A person with cancer is sick, a person with a belly full of Jack Daniels is a (DRUNK). In my own case, I am overweight, not because I am sick but because I am self-indulgent. What is needed here is not for me to educate myself on alcoholism (which is a multi billion dollar business) but for you to wake up and smell the coffee! Drunks are self-indulgent to the point of humiliating themselves and their families in order to satisfy their own selfish desire. Oh yes, when they see the trail of broken hearts and dreams they have left behind, they claim to be sorry and vow to do better. I have had hours of conversation with people who have overcome their addiction and I have never had the first one to claim to have been (sick). The drunks who claim to be sick and have family and friends to avow that they are (sick) usually remain drunks. It is not my purpose here to be confrontational, I have seen the use of alcohol destroy the lives of family members and dear friends. Those bottles that line the shelves at the local ABC store do not have legs or a will of their own, human beings do. Please, do not compare selfish, prideful people who pour alcohol down their necks to people who are fighting for their lives because of real sickness.

The former treasurer, Barbara Dantonio, was elected to another office within the Wilson County Democratic Party prior to the theft of the checks. She was interim Treasurer because the newly elected treasurer decided not to take the position. The checks being stolen had nothing to do with the changing of the Treasurer position. Try and get your story right and stop repeating misinformation. And again, this was a crime that had nothing to do with being a Democrat or Republican. This article was not about the Democrats and their yearly SLOB event, it seems to me that it was about the theft. Move on, it is taken care of and is a slam to the Democratic Party to repeat this type of gossip and encourage the negative Republicans and Tea Partyiers of this county to slander the Democrats, when, as usual, they do not know what they are talking about.

So many self righteous people need to educate themselves. You obviously have not lived a real life with real problems or you would not be so down on Mark Bibbs and his problem with alcohol. And of course, if you are a Republican, you choose to look the other way when it comes to George W. Bush and his problem with alcohol. Educate yourself and quit finger pointing. It could happen in your family or with your friends. Then you might not be so high and mighty. No one asks to have a problem with alcohol and no one needs to be put down for having the problem. Be careful, someone in your family could be next and I am sure you would feel very differently about it then. I hope you do not call yourself a Christian or go to church, because if you are a Christian or do go to church, you are not listening to the message. Peace, Love and Understanding. Have a great day and leave Mark Bibbs alone. If you do not want to vote for him, then don't. If Susan Martin is the only choice the Wilson County Republicans had, then I feel very sorry for them.

Does someone hold Mark Bibbs down and pour alcohol down his throat?.....He is an addict because of a character flaw, He is not a victim! If you are going to insist that he is sick then send him to a hospital and spend a fortune for nothing, unless he makes the decision to stay sober in his own mind and his own heart. There are bleeding hearts that will tell you that child molesters are sick and can't control their actions, are you willing to cut them the same slack you do Bibbs? If Mark Bibbs lived where there was no alcohol available would he be a drunk? The answer is NO! If a bar opened in the same place would someone have to drag him there and force him to drink? The answer is NO! Did it ever occur to you ex-wife that you most likely aided and abetted your husbands weakness. Treating these people like poor helpless victims does nothing to help them and only makes the situation worse. I would be willing to bet big that you (ex-wife) are a liberal democrat, holding to all the misguided false beliefs that are sending this country down the drain. Get a grip, stop making excuses for failures and start charging them with the responsibility to straighten up. In closing, it is pure unadulterated arrogance and delusions of granduer that have prompted Bibbs to run for this office and certainly no desire to be a servant!

Sounds to me Mr. What? that you have a problem with educating yourself about alcoholism. As a mother of a child who was run over and died from a teenager, not an alcoholic, I know the heartache of losing a child to an auto accident. As an ex-wife of an alcoholic, I know that heartache also. You know nothing of real life if you think that the problem of alcoholism is designated to a select few, it is not. It can affect anyone, it knows not sex, color or education. Be thankful you do not suffer from this and stop pointing fingers at Mark Bibbs, someone in your family could be the next victim of this horrible disease. Try some positive support instead of acting like you are holier that thou as the expression goes. If you do not like Mark, do not vote for him but keep your nasty and unnecessary comments to yourself. Someone in your family could be the next alcoholic, would you want them treated like you are treating Mark because he has a disease you do not understand, Mr. What (holier than thou finger pointing person?

Would you load up your family to drive to Raleigh at night knowing Bibbs was heading home? Knowledge, education, likeability and all other attributes are null and void when a man is willing to squander it all for a drink. I wish him well in facing his demons and I hope one day he will see the error of his ways. If he is elected and winds up wiping out a school bus or an entire family guess who the fingers will be pointing at.Call me whatever you like but I don't need nor would I vote for a drunk to represent me anywhere!

Leave his problem out of the picture. I am amazed that so few realize that George W. Bush is a recovering alcoholic. Give Mark a break. He is a great teacher and knows the issues. I am truly amazed at his knowledge and his education. He takes the time with people and does not talk down to them about real, important issues. If you remember, Buck Newton, had some problems in his election and came out smelling like a rose. Stop finger pointing about Mark's problem with alcohol because is you look, you have three pointing back at you. If you have never had a relative or friend with an addiction problem, get down on your knees right now and thank God. You never know when someone in your family or a friend may have this problem. Leave Mark's personal demons alone, he deserves to be treated better than you are treating him. I agree with Please Stop and ask you to Stop Now, Stop Now, Stop Now. I will be voting for Mark Bibbs. Mitt Romney while popular among the white population just doesn't have the minority vote. He doesn't have the women's vote. He doesn't have the youth vote. He needs to pick up on these demographics to have any chance at all. Look at the RNC, prodominately older white folks there. I didnt say COMPLETLY but mostly.I feel the GOP has lost touch with America. They have there conservative views and thats fine and all but look at where we are at today as opposed to the Regan years. Gays are more accepted women are being treated more as equals. I feel that they are to polarized to appeal to a majority of voters. Therefore as much as hate to say Obama will win in 2012. How dare you say that the President and the Democratic Party have ousted God. Republicans can talk about God and how religious they are but saying and doing are two different things. They are against gays but are undercover gays and act as though they are so superior to everyone else until they get caught. Jesus said all that say Lord, Lord will not enter into His kingdom. A person doesn't have to wear their religion on their sleeve to believe in God. If you be around them long enough you will find out who their true deliverer is. And those of you are so Mitt Romney crazy - and I do mean crazy - can't see that Mitt doesn't give a darn about your non-wealthy selves. If you don't have millions - Mitt doesn't give a rhyme! This country was right at the brink of destruction when President Obama took office and if he hadn't bailed out those banks - who do you think would have lost everything - the American people and that includes all of you. President Obama did not say that he would fix things in four years (I don't know where ??? got that remark from). He said that he would do his best to but when you have Republicans calling a meeting right after his inauguration saying that they were not going to approve anything he brought forward and were going to make him a one-time president, that goes to show how narrow-minded, vindictive and un-American they really are. Instead of trying to build up American - they would rather destroy it than to let it be known that a black man came in and fixed it. The main reason non of you like President Obama is one reason and one reason only - BECAUSE HE IS BLACK! You are quick to say that President Obama- who is a Baptist - does not believe in God but are quick to embrace Mitt Romney who is a Mormon. Yet a man that doesn't believe in God, drinks beer in fron of children, and who said 4 years ago that he could get it done in 4 years is not a poor example to our children. Over 16 trillion in debt and still spending off the backs of TAXPAYERS, while the LAZY and IRRESPONSIBLE drain OUR system dry all while PYAING NO taxes. I guess that's not a poor example to teach our youth either!!! At least the top half of the people are paying some taxes. Sory Baro, when talking about conflicting values I think I will teach my children about hardwork, self respect and faith and you teach yours about government entitlements, irresponsibility, and NO faith.
