Bibbs, GOP spar over his tax records

Republicans accuse Democratic candidate Mark Bibbs of having tax problems, saying it is a sign he would not be a good leader.

"Mark Bibbs has grandiose ideas for spending taxpayer dollars while he habitually dodges his own tax obligations,” said Matt Bales, political director, North Carolina Republican House Caucus. "Bibbs personally loaned his campaign $100,000, while not paying his taxes on time. This action is an insult to all the hard-working citizens in Wilson and Pitt counties who are responsible and pay their taxes on time. Leadership is about action, not words; Mark’s actions raise questions about his leadership and stewardship of our tax dollars.”

Bibbs said Republicans are reaching at straws.

"First my property taxes have been paid – my home property taxes are escrowed through my mortgage company,” Bibbs said. "My property taxes at my office are supposed to be escrowed. For whatever reason, they were not. Once I became aware of it, I paid it immediately.”

Bibbs said the bank had already paid the property taxes.

County documents show his property taxes have been paid, but were paid late in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Bales also said Bibbs had federal tax liens against him for non-payment of taxes due for the calendar years of 2004-2007; total amount of the liens was $29,788.93.

"I had a federal IRS tax lien years ago that was paid and settled from taxes that were owed from my law practice when I had one in Raleigh,” Bibbs said. "Those taxes were paid years ago.”

Bibbs said Republican Caucus is bringing up his taxes because they have nothing else.

"Susan and the Republicans are desperate – they have internal polls and I have poll numbers and they see where I have a slight lead,” Bibbs said. "Anything they can do to distract voters’ attention from real issues, that’s what they are attempting to do.”

But Bales said his issue is that Bibbs wants to be the steward over the public’s affairs, and that he can’t manage his own affairs.

Further, Bales said he has seen nothing in the public records that leads him to believe those taxes have been paid as of yet.

Bibbs fired back at Bales, saying he is protecting Martin from facing him in a debate.

"It’s time Susan stop hiding behind Matt Bales and the House Caucus and talk for herself,” Bibbs said. "This will be the last time I will entertain any conversation that comes from Matt Bales. From here on out, if it doesn’t come from Susan, it’s not worth my time to discuss.”

Bales said it isn’t Martin’s job to debate Bibbs.

"Susan’s job is to run her campaign by meeting voters in the House District 8 area, as well as raise money and get he message out,” Bales answered. "The action of the House Republican Caucus serves to inform the public of what Bibbs is distorting of his record and his past.”

Bales said Martin has been busily campaigning.

"She needs to continue doing that rather than stepping into a hostile arena with Mark and his distorted back and forth,” Bales said.

Republicans need to quit worrying about Bibbs and what he drinks and focus on their leader's foot-in-mouth disease.

No where in this article does it state that Ms. Martin has said anything about Mr. Bibbs but Bibbs certainly blames her for things someone else said. Notice it is not her character or background that is being questioned. She is an example I would much rather see my children follow. Our household and many friends will be casting our votes for Martin. No question there.

several people have referenced MS Martin as a computer and software salesperson, so i assumed she was a working citizen. if she does not work a public sector job and is a citizen/ homemaker, even better. no job is more important than raising a family and providing a stable home life. it gives her a different perspective on what average mothers and homemakers go through and the needs of families that will suit her well in the state general assembly.compare that to a boozing lawyer who wants to buy himself some insider political power and ego trip , ill take the average homemaker/ citizen anyday. we dont need anymore boozing lawyers in raleigh

She is NOT an average WORKING class citizen. She is an average citizen/homemaker and has been for many years. Bibbs, we will see you at the fair. Thank you again for continually being accessible to the actual WORKING class citizens here in Wilson County.

states it cleary. both of their positions reputations and personal history are well documented and clearly there for any voter to make an informed decision. IMHO there is no decision.send another, big spending , liberal alcoholic lawyer or an average working class citizen who obviously is in it for the public well being , instead of longterm financial gain for her or himself.

if Bibbs spends 100k of his own money for a 14k stae house job , he must see alot of residual income associated with the political career he aspires to. Wayne Gay made a fortune off his political connections and business partnerships with politically connected shady associates. my wife and i changed our party afilation to unafiliated the day Wayne Gay announced he was changing his to republican. i assure you MR Bibbs , with all his problems , needs his 100 k for other things than political aspirations. I assure you he isnt spending that kind of money unless he sees something in it financially for himself. as for mS Martin, why cant an average working citizen , with an impecable reputation and standing in the community be taken seriously for a part time"citizen" state legislator, like the founding fathers intended instead of some alcoholic( recently not recovered) attorney whose public record and actions speak for themselves.OBTW who cares if you lived out at the CC and now live at Belle Meade or that you are a rhino. you sound more left the left wing whacko, ms Baro.

Susan, is that really you or someone pretending to be you? If it is you, Bibbs has the right to spend as much of his own money as he wants to. Just wish I had $100,000 to spend on anything, let alone a campaign. But Susan let's get some things straight, if he's spent $100,000 he must really be dedicated and committed to that job. It only pays $14,000 a year according to the Raleigh News & Observer. He'd have less time to spend at his law office, and likely lose and/or have to turn away business & clients as a result. The founders of our state constitution clearly meant for a part-time legislature, no question there. Bibbs is not a slick, professional politician as you described. He's a trained, highly intelligent & articulate lawyer who knows what to do to get things done. What skills do you bring to the job? Selling IBM computers and software to various businesses? Come on Susan. You are not a joke, but you certainly cannot be taken seriously for a lawmaking job. I think that you would make a great school board member, perhaps that's the job you should run for. Bibbs is way out of your league. You know it, your Republican handlers know it, and we voters know it. That's why you are afraid to debate him in public or anywhere else for that matter.
Bibbs, I have some political advice for you. Stop being the southern gentleman. I know you don't want to attack Susan Martin, but they are swinging at you from all directions, including below the belt. In the south, men don't attack women in any arena, including politics. But I'm a woman, and I'd like to see you even the scales! I loved it when you called her "a damn Yankee" in response to the GOP calling you, "a liberal trial lawyer." Call her a "chicken" or some phrase you can use that means the same thing. You're a lawyer, a wordsmith, act like it! Do everything that's fair to let people see that's she's a weak, right-wing, puppet, who's afraid of you and afraid to let people see she doesn't have what it takes. I've known who you are for quite a while. I used to live in the country club, I'm in Belle Meade now and I'm a Republican business owner. I've seen you in action in a courtroom. I was on one of your juries. We voted with your client. So, use your skills to take out the cream puff, desperate housewife from Wisteria Lane, I mean Kenan Street. You've got my vote!

I am with you on that. How about the Republican Governer and Presidential candidates showing their tax returns. Leave Mark alone. He is doing a fine job campaigning and answering questions. If fact, he spent part of the afternoon on Saturday talking to residents of Stantonsburg. And where was Susan Martin, not in Stantonsburg, that is for sure. You have my vote Mark and I hope Susan comes out from hiding and debates you. Her campaign material is vague and dull.

FOR MR BIBBS TO SPEND 100,OOO DOLLARS OF HIS OWN MONEY TO RUN FOR A STATE HOUSE SEAT, HE MUST THINK THERE IS A LOT OF FINANACIAL OR BUSINESS CONNECTION COMPENSATION IN IT SOMEWHERE.HE IS TRYING TO BUY HIMSELF A SEAT

Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 8:04 AM said...

I believe Susan Martin is perfectly qualified. We don't need any more slick politicians in Raleigh. We need a real common sense representative who is less concerned about politics and more concerned about the issues that this area struggles with.

Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 1:36 AM said...

Absolutely, I believe he is mentally stable. If it's your opinion a house wife for the last 10+ years that worked for IBM for for a few years in the nineties is the reasonable choice you're right you must be reasonable. Martins lack of debate skills I'm sure will make us look fantastic in Raleigh. No need to be qualified for this job. I guess my grandmother should of ran. She teaches Sunday school too. She's also unreasonable and voting for Bibbs!

Monday, September 17, 2012 at 7:09 PM To Said: said...

So you believe that a recovering alcoholic is mentally stable??? And this by Bibbs' own admission. We are not talking several years ago. We are talking about recent actions. and according to the NC Bar, Bibbs has violated his probation by drinking andfailing to contact the drug screeningn agency on 30 different occasions.Guess we will see the results of that hearing i a few days. See, that is the problem with folks today. We do not hold people accountable for their actions. So I guess it would be ok with you if Bibbs were to get elected, fall off the wagon and make a fool out of himself and Wilson County in Raleigh? No thanks. I and most other reasonable thinking voters are sticking to the only other reasonable choice.

Monday, September 17, 2012 at 3:17 PM said...

My only issue with your statement is when you accuse someone of currently being "not mentally stable" you should state it as your opinion, because that's what it is. Myself and many others don't share your opinion no matter how many times people try to bully Bibbs. Bibbs has admitted to and paid the price for every PAST poor choice he has made. You stated this as well by mentioning he signed the NCBAR findings in 2009. This is not new news. It's my opinion that some people can't let go of the PAST. It is also my opinion that some people who have personal issues with Bibbs will try anything to drag him repeatedly through the mud. I believe no matter how nice of a lady Martin is that Bibbs is undisputedly more qualified for this job and that's all I care about.

Monday, September 17, 2012 at 10:23 AM To Said: said...

Have you not seen the other articles? SO i guess a mentally stable person calls the clerk of court's office and then uses profanity towards them and then goes into the court house and causes a scene. His probation officer then ordered that he submit to a breathalyzer where he registered a .19. His suspended sentence was revoked and he served time in NCDOC not just the Wilson County jail. This is factual information provided by the NC Bar Association. Bibbs signed the hearing documents. Now, he is being brought back for another hearing for violating the conditions of his probation with the NC Bar And there is nothing that Bibbs will be able to do about your electric bill. Sounds like more Obama broken promises from 2008!

Monday, September 17, 2012 at 9:58 PM She's right said...

Susan Martin is doing the right thing by not responding to Mark Bibbs' tirades. All of the bad press is his own fault, not hers. She's playing it smart by letting him dig himself deeper in his own murky history of alcohol abuse, paying taxes late, etc. the more he protests, the guiltier he looks! This only proves his instability.

Sunday, September 16, 2012 at 6:55 PM Glass Houses? said...

We now know why Romney will not release his tax records from before 2010. A story out today states that many wealthy investors were using Swiss Bank Accounts to illegally shelter funds and avoid taxes. The US Government offered individuals Amnesty if they included the illegally sheltered money in their Swiss Accounts in their 2009 returns. It appears that Romney was not hiding the low tax rate he paid; he may be hiding the fact that he had to pay up for his illegal tax shelters from the years before. People living in glass houses……

Sunday, September 16, 2012 at 3:51 PM He already said it said...

Bibbs answered the ONLY issue/question that concerned me as a voter. That was the fact that he PAID his taxes. He's fine with me now.

Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 2:53 PM said...

Truth hurts.....Bibbs is now, "not mentally stable". Can you back your accusations up w/ facts please? And @Wilson what does paying your taxes on time have to do w/ his law license? My electric bill is outrageously high and some months I have to choose between feeding my family good food, paying my mortgage or paying the electric bill on time. So you're saying anyone that's working that requires a license to do their job (RN, teacher, ect) thay pays a bill late the state should revoke their license? Please, that's just crazy. Just because some months (or years ago in this case) some people have to pay their bills late (whatever those bills may be) has nothing to do w/ being able to perform a job.

Does Susan Martin have nothing substantive to say? I keep getting these mail flyers with non-specific generic promises. If she won't consider a public debate, then what use can/will she be for all of us in Raleigh? We need someone who will look out for us, NOT a wallflower.

Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 2:02 PM said...

So now we find out that not only is Bibbs not mentally stable enough to represent us, he is not a responsible tax payer. Wake up Wilson. This is not the person that we need representing us. And the only response from Bibbs is why won't Susan debate me? I guess there is not a lot he can say. The truth hurts!

Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 8:59 AM Hmm... said...

I don't really care for either candidate, but I agree with another poster...it is a sign of responsibility toward voters for a candidate to participate in a debate. Not doing so is unreasonable. Ms. Martin needs to debate.

Why is it alot of attoneys in this town don't pay taxes. They should be required to pay taxes they owe to maintain their law license. But I guess they are above the law.

his is a Wilson and Pitt County race. Why do we need a Raleigh Republican staffer to come tell us who to listen to and what issues are important. I'd love to see a good old fashioned debate between these two. I was an undecided independent, but now I'm leaning Bibbs. Why keep bashing him? What is Susan afraid of? Can she not speak for herself? I dont know Bibbs, but Buck Newton was my lawyer in a car accident case. I voted for him last time, and will again this time. He supports Susan Martin, so I was leaning her way, but now if she won't debate Bibbs, how can she debate on the floor of the NC House? Folks that will be her main job! That's like me getting Buck (a lawyer) for my accident case, and he's afraid to go to court! Come on Susan, face reality here. If you are a savy business woman, who can solve problems, then show us what you have in the public arena. Let your buddies keep bashing Bibbs, then you will have them to thank on November 7th when Bibbs has won and you have not.

Children, remember the story of the goose who laid the golden egg? In the real world the top 5% pay over 57% of all taxes. Children we should be so thankful for the top 5% (GOLDEN GOOSE) instead of screaming that they pay even more until we end up with a dead goose. Mr. Bibbs and others who dodge and pay late or not at all will be in big trouble when their (GOLDEN GOOSE) is cooked!

In my opinion, it IS her job to debate Bibbs. If she wants my vote she better start proving herself to me and Wilson County. I have seen nothing from Martin but random mail fliers exploiting her children and Bales running a dirty campaign on her behalf. Meanwhile, Mark is out in this community holding forms about issues I care about. Is all Martin and her campaign are doing that I'm aware of is continually trying to bash Bibbs. Your getting bad advice Martin. Your Christian campaign words aren't lining up with Bales actions on your behalf. Forget what I said above, Martin will not be getting this Republicans vote. Bibbs will have my full support.

Who is this vile woman? I have never seen anyone, male or female, run such a disgusting, underhanded campaign! Ms. Martin must not be very convinced of her abilities to hold this position as she CONTINUALLY stoops to digging up dirt, real or imagined on Mr. Bibbs in order to secure the office.
Mr. Bibbs, you have my vote, sir. Ms. Martin has just made sure of that!!!!

I'm glad Matt Bales, Susan and the GOP felt the need to bring up the subject of taxes.  They should expect their nominees for Governor and President to receive an onslaught of letters to the editor about their tax records.
Congratulations on your research project, Bales...you hack!
