Purdue Pharmaceuticals to lay off 6

By Rochelle Moore | Times Staff Writer

A competitive market and company restructuring led Purdue Pharmaceuticals to announce the layoffs of six employees at its Wilson plant.

The last time the drug manufacturer laid off employees in Wilson was 2004, when 42 workers lost their jobs. Purdue Pharmaceuticals, which opened in the Wilson Corporate Park in 2000, employs close to 200 people.

Donogh McGuire, executive director and Wilson plant manager, said the company is trying to operate more efficiently as part of the restructure. Employees were notified of the layoff the week of Feb. 10, company officials confirmed this week.

"Purdue operates in a competitive environment and attempts to operate as effectively as possible to ensure our company’s sustainability,” McGuire said. "As a result of some efficiency and restructuring initiatives, six employees at our Wilson facility were notified last week that their positions were impacted.

"This was a difficult decision, one that was made with utmost consideration for the colleagues who’ve been affected. This decision does not impact the company’s plans for growth in North Carolina or our continuing commitment to invest in the region.”

Purdue Pharmaceuticals is engaged in the research, development, production and marketing of prescription and over-the-counter medicines and health care products. The company is an industry leader in pain medication research, and makes several medications used to treat pain.

In Wilson, Purdue Pharmaceuticals operates from a 240,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art pharmaceutical manufacturing, packaging and distribution facility that produces oral solid dosage tablets and serves as the distribution center for prescription products. The plant is a fully integrated site with late-stage development activities as well as clinical and commercial supply, and is a world leader in security and product-tracking technology.
