Police: Employee stole $367K from appliance store

A Wilson appliance store’s former office manager is accused of stealing more than $367,000 from the business in a four-year span.

Police charged 40-year-old Sonya Renee Jackson of 4807 Bluff Place with embezzlement Friday after Bass Appliance Inc. discovered missing money during an accountant’s audit, manager and co-owner Thomas Bass said.

"We found discrepancies in the books and we traced it back to her,” Bass said on Monday. "We put a lot of trust in her.”

Jackson embezzled $367,386 from the appliance store between June 2008 and May 2012, according to arrest warrants.

Owners had the store’s books audited after Jackson left for another job early this summer, Bass said. Jackson had worked for Bass Appliance on and off for about 20 years.

"She would work for a few years and then she would move away,” Bass said. "She came back in 2003 and has been here ever since.”

Police began investigating the embezzlement claim in July and determined through bank records and credit card statements that Jackson had taken the money, Wilson Police Capt. Keith Pendergrass said in a news release.

Jackson wasn’t home Monday afternoon and messages left for her with a family member were not returned in time for this story.

Bass said Jackson hadn’t made arrangements to return the money. A judge could order her to pay restitution if she is found guilty.

"The court system has their hands in it,” Bass said.

The store at 3201 Airport Blvd. sells refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves, washers, dryers, air conditioners and other home appliances.

"We’re still working through things, and we’re still here,” Bass said. "We’re still supporting all our customers, and we’re going to try our best to continue to do that.”

Jackson was charged with two counts each of embezzlement of $100,000 or more, a Class C felony, and embezzlement, a Class H felony.

She was released from the Wilson County Detention Center on a $5,000 secured bond and her first court appearance was scheduled for Monday. | 265-7821
