A Wilson County man remains in a coma after police say a car slammed into his mo-ped at a red light last week.
Thomas Wooten of Stancil Town Road east of Stantonsburg is receiving intensive care at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. He was comatose and remained in critical condition Wednesday, according to family members.
Wooten left a convenience store on his mo-ped and stopped for a red light at the intersection of Saratoga Street and Moyton Avenue in Stantonsburg around 9 a.m. Oct. 2, according to Stantonsburg Police Chief John Hunt.
A 1993 Toyota Corolla driven by Devona Jeniece Holmes of Pope Farm Road south of Stantonsburg struck the mo-ped from behind, Hunt said.
The impact threw Wooten from the mo-ped, and he landed on the Toyota’s hood and windshield, according to police. Paramedics rushed Wooten to the Greenville hospital.
Police charged Holmes with failing to reduce speed to avoid a collision and driving on a revoked license. Hunt said she could face additional charges if Wooten dies from his injuries.
