Passenger dies in DWI crash

A Bailey woman died early Wednesday when a drunken driver smashed her sport utility vehicle into a tree in Raleigh, state troopers said.
Amanda Brooke Massingill, 21, of 15096 Old Smithfield Road just east of Bailey, was riding in the front passenger seat of 29-year-old Lydia Marie Mills’ Pontiac SUV when it ran off the road and hit a tree, according to 1st Sgt. Jeff Gordon of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Mills, of 4104 Labrador Drive, Raleigh, ran off the road on her own street at 2:39 a.m. Wednesday, Gordon said. The crash happened on Labrador Drive near its intersection with Old Milburnie Road in a northeastern Raleigh neighborhood.
"It ran off the right shoulder, struck a tree and entered the ditch, where it came to a final rest,” Gordon said. "As a result of the collision, the front-seat passenger died.”
Massingill was attending college and studying to be a teacher, according to her obituary. Her funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church on N.C. 58 north of Wilson.
Gordon said Mills was drunk and that alcohol use and speeding contributed to the crash. She also allegedly was driving on a revoked license.
Paramedics took Mills to WakeMed’s Raleigh campus, where she was treated for injuries sustained in the wreck, Gordon said.
Troopers charged Mills with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, driving while license revoked and failure to maintain lane control.
