Police: Thieves target elderly shoppers

By Corey Friedman | Times Online Editor

Wilson police are looking for a pair of thieves who steal from elderly people as they shop.

Detectives released surveillance video images of two women who police say stole an 82-year-old woman’s wallet at Walmart recently and used her credit card while she was still in the store. Police are seeking the public’s help to identify the women.

Thieves often steal cash and credit cards from women’s purses placed in shopping carts when the women walk away or become distracted, police said.

"It’s really important that everyone makes sure their wallets and purses are close to them at all times,” said Wilson police spokesman John Slaughter.

Slaughter said purses and wallets left in cars should be placed out of sight and car doors should be locked.

Images from store surveillance video show two African-American women wearing blue jeans and black coats. One has long, curly hair and the other is shown wearing a knit cap.

Detective Don Piccini said the women are going to various businesses and targeting elderly people.

Anyone with information on the women’s identity is asked to call the Wilson Police Department at 399-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 243-2255.
