Scammer claims to collect for firefighters

A scammer who says he’s collecting donations for new firefighting equipment is not doing so on behalf of Wilson Fire and Rescue Services, officials said Thursday.

City residents told The Wilson Times that a man knocked on the door of their Raleigh Road Parkway home Monday seeking donations for city of Wilson fire equipment.

"We don’t do any soliciting of monies from the public for anything,” Deputy Fire Chief Tracy Mosley said. "We have not and do not. That’s pretty much cut and dried.”

Firefighters said residents approached by anyone claiming to seek donations for a city of Wilson department should report the visit to Wilson police.

The Raleigh Road Parkway couple, who asked that their names not be used, said the scammer was a white man in his late 20s to early 30s with short, dark hair and was driving a white compact car.

Residents who are asked to make contributions to city agencies can call the Wilson Police Department at 399-2323.
