Two charged in fatal Wilson shooting
Edgecombe County men arrested in connection with Oct. 24 shooting death

Police have arrested the second suspect and an alleged accomplice in a Raleigh man’s Oct. 24 killing in a car outside a Wilson apartment building.

Wilson police and U.S. Marshals Service agents caught 25-year-old Jamaal Jemel Hilliard and 18-year-old Rameik Anderson late Wednesday in Edgecombe County.

Hilliard, of 712 Chestnut St. in Tarboro, is charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon. Anderson, of 370 Melissa Drive southeast of Rocky Mount, is charged with acting as an accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.

Police on Nov. 7 charged 27-year-old Darrion Devon Williams of 240 River Run Road east of Rocky Mount with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the killing.

Hilliard and Williams are accused of fatally shooting 29-year-old Ronnie Earl Griffin Jr. of 3824 Old Coach Road in Raleigh during a robbery attempt on the morning of Oct. 24.

Officers found Griffin’s body in a car at 1901 Lipscomb Road shortly before 10 a.m. Oct. 24 after Beacon Pointe Apartments residents reported gunshots. Police haven’t said whether Griffin had been driving the car, a Ford Taurus with Tennessee license plates.

Police haven’t said how they believe the two murder suspects — both of whom have listed addresses in Edgecombe County — crossed paths with a Raleigh man at a Wilson apartment complex.

Griffin’s killing, Wilson’s fifth homicide of 2012, remains under investigation.

A police manhunt through the woods and nearby neighborhoods followed the shooting, with officers searching for a man riding a black bicycle. Officials described that man as a suspect in the killing.

Officials didn’t say if either Williams or Hilliard is the man police initially had sought.

Hilliard is a probation absconder who was wanted by the N.C. Division of Adult Corrections, according to prison system records. He was on active probation for a February 2012 possession of a firearm by a felon conviction in Edgecombe County.

Records show that Hilliard spent a month in prison for June 2011 convictions on charges of willful and wanton injury to real property and using or possessing drug paraphernalia in Edgecombe County.

In late 2008 and early 2009, he served a nine-month prison sentence for Edgecombe County convictions on hit-and-run, speeding to elude arrest, driving while license revoked and carrying a concealed weapon.

Hilliard’s first convictions — on charges of simple affray and causing wanton injury to personal property — came in Edgecombe County in June 2003.

He also has pending criminal charges of felony breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, felony possession of cocaine and possession of a firearm by a felon in Edgecombe County Superior Court.

Williams, the first man charged in the killing, was on probation for a December 2011 driver’s license revocation in Edgecombe County, according to the N.C. Division of Adult Correction. He previously was given probation for an unauthorized use of a motor conveyance conviction, state records show.

In August 2007, Williams was convicted of possession with intent to sell a Schedule II controlled substance in Edgecombe County. Prison records show Williams served a three-month sentence and was released in November 2007.

The man who was killed also had a criminal history. Records show that Griffin was convicted of larceny in Johnston, Cumberland and Duplin counties and had a 2002 drunken-driving conviction. He was given probation and did not serve prison time. | 265-7821
