Three accused of smuggling heroin

ROCKY MOUNT — Sheriff’s deputies say they seized nearly 400 bindles of heroin and arrested three people in a pair of Wednesday drug busts.

Deputies learned that a man staying at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Rocky Mount had a large amount of heroin, Capt. Pat Joyner of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies stopped the white Cadillac Escalade the suspect was driving when they noticed his brake lights were out.

Deputies said the driver, 35-year-old Devan Williams of Poplar Street in Scotland Neck, and passenger, 36-year-old Marion Williams of Lynne Street in Rocky Mount, gave them permission to search the sport utility vehicle.

Joyner said the deputies found 290 bindles of heroin inside a plastic bag of rice.

Devan Williams was charged with two counts of trafficking heroin and one count each of conspiring to traffic heroin, maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance and driving while license revoked. He was booked into the Nash County Jail in Nashville under a $295,000 bond.

Marion Williams was charged with one count each of trafficking heroin and conspiring to traffic heroin. He was jailed in Nash County under a $100,000 bond.

Deputies also stopped a woman’s car Wednesday after learning that she was driving to a Food Lion supermarket on N.C. 97 south of Rocky Mount with a large quantity of heroin, Joyner said.

Brandy Thomas, 37, of Oakdale Drive in Rocky Mount, was stopped in the Food Lion parking lot and deputies said they found 109 bindles of heroin in her car.

Joyner didn’t say whether Thomas’s arrest was related to the other heroin seizure.

Thomas was charged with trafficking heroin by possession, trafficking heroin by transportation and maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance. She was jailed in Nashville under a $100,000 bond.
