10th man charged in park killing

Wilson Police charged a 10th man with murder in a Sept. 24 killing at a Wilson park, according to Sgt. Steve Stroud.

On Friday, detectives arrested Anthony Jerondel Williams, 21, of 913 Pender St. Apt B, charging him with one count of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Williams and others are accused of killing 20-year-old Estevan Martinez and wounding another man in a gang-related shooting at Freeman Park.

Williams was also served with an outstanding probation violation.

The 10 men now charged in Martinez’s killing are accused of driving to the park and spraying a group of people with gunfire.

Police don’t believe Martinez was targeted in the shooting and witnesses said he shielded his girlfriend and brother from gunfire during the attack.

At least two or three of the nine defendants are validated gang members, police have said.

Detectives aren’t sure how many shooters there were, but all 10 are charged with killing Martinez under the felony-murder rule, which allows police to charge someone with murder if he or she committed a serious crime that caused or contributed to a person’s death.

Other suspects in the shooting are Shabazz Zahair Robinson, 18, of 702 Reid St.; 19-year-old Derrick Jamar Ruffin, no address given; Marcus Denzel Hilliard, 19, of 809 Gold St. E.; Malik Demar Allen, 17, and Douglas Daquan Allen, 19, both of 913 Phillips St.; Jonathan Octavius Gear, 23, of 617 Crowell St.; Daquonta Tyrell Batts, 21, of 708 Vance St. E., Apartment B; Joshua Harrell Burt, 22, of 1006 Sunnybrook Road; and Jamorra Raheem Rogers, 17, of 510 Winstead St.

Williams was booked into the Wilson County Detention Center under no bond for the Freeman Street charges and a $500,000 bond for the probation violation. Williams’ first court date is Monday.
