Batchelor painting in Reeve Foundation contest

A painting by Wilson resident Amanda Bissette Batchelor is competing in the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation’s Expressions of Paralysis contest.

Batchelor, who was left a quadriplegic after a Christmas Day 2011 car accident, painted the Christopher Reeve quote: "Once you choose hope, anything’s possible.”

In her artist statement, Batchelor said, "The dragonflies symbolize that we need to make the most of every single moment of life that we have. The pink dragonfly represents the unconditional love and nurturing that I receive each day ... that is my hope. The two yellow dragonflies stand for my optimism that there are great things to come and for cheerfulness. That each day I am to be happy for all that I have in this life. The turquoise background reminds us to be happy and friendly enjoying life each day to the fullest.”

Benjamin Hawley did the drawing for her, and she used a paintbrush wedged in her arm splint to add the color. Batchelor can’t move her arms, but she can use her shoulders to move her arms and maneuver the paintbrush. Painting has become a fun hobby for Batchelor, and she’s enjoyed giving away her work. One of her paintings hangs in Parker’s Barbecue, where she loves to eat.

Batchelor said she had no expectations when entering her painting but just did it for fun. But she was very excited to see her name on the finalist list this week.

The winner will be chosen by popular online vote, so Batchelor needs your help. To vote, visit http://www.christopherreeve.org/site/c.ddJFKRNoFiG/b.9148139/k.7E73/Expressions_of_Paralysis.htm. There will be a link on The Wilson Times Facebook page. There is an Amanda Barnes above Amanda Batchelor, so choose carefully when voting.

The winning artwork will hang in the Foundation offices. Voting ends June 29.
