Police: Employee stole $367K from appliance store

A Wilson appliance store’s former office manager is accused of stealing more than $367,000 from the business in a four-year span.

Police charged 40-year-old Sonya Renee Jackson of 4807 Bluff Place with embezzlement Friday after Bass Appliance Inc. discovered missing money during an accountant’s audit, manager and co-owner Thomas Bass said.

"We found discrepancies in the books and we traced it back to her,” Bass said on Monday. "We put a lot of trust in her.”

Jackson embezzled $367,386 from the appliance store between June 2008 and May 2012, according to arrest warrants.

Owners had the store’s books audited after Jackson left for another job early this summer, Bass said. Jackson had worked for Bass Appliance on and off for about 20 years.

"She would work for a few years and then she would move away,” Bass said. "She came back in 2003 and has been here ever since.”

Police began investigating the embezzlement claim in July and determined through bank records and credit card statements that Jackson had taken the money, Wilson Police Capt. Keith Pendergrass said in a news release.

Jackson wasn’t home Monday afternoon and messages left for her with a family member were not returned in time for this story.

Bass said Jackson hadn’t made arrangements to return the money. A judge could order her to pay restitution if she is found guilty.

"The court system has their hands in it,” Bass said.

The store at 3201 Airport Blvd. sells refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves, washers, dryers, air conditioners and other home appliances.

"We’re still working through things, and we’re still here,” Bass said. "We’re still supporting all our customers, and we’re going to try our best to continue to do that.”

Jackson was charged with two counts each of embezzlement of $100,000 or more, a Class C felony, and embezzlement, a Class H felony.

She was released from the Wilson County Detention Center on a $5,000 secured bond and her first court appearance was scheduled for Monday.

y'all
contraction for you all. Despite what some think, it is not only used by hicks and the uneducated. People from all walks of life, traditionally the southern states use it.
ya'll
369 up, 340 down
Slang contraction for the 2nd person plural pronoun, utilized amongst the indigenous populations of the southern continental United States.
better than the yanky word (yous guys)
Origin: Often incorrectly attributed to the contraction of "you + all," the word actually originated from the fusing of "ya + all." The kind of fella who would say ya'll for the first time would not be enunciating a clean and crisp "you" in his daily speech. "You" wasn't in his spoken vocabulary, but "ya" was. Now, try to say "ya all." It is actually not easy to do as two separate words. To say it with a normal cadence, it already almost sounds like ya'll, but with the slightest stutter. "Ya all" quite naturally slips into the familiar pronoun we all use. Ya + all = ya'll. When you look at it that way, the placement of the apostrophe after the "a" makes sense. Alternately, you + all = y'all. However, the ya + all transition more naturally illustrates the origin of "ya'll." "You all" is cumbersome, although that is usually how yall is explained to uninitiated Yankees, whose experience with "ya" is often limited. "You all" just doesn't lead the the inevitable ya'll that "Ya all" does. However, y'all

if anyone cares.

Obviously hit a nerve which means I was spot on. And posting with your name makes a difference how? Think it would make me believe you more?? Add credibility to your post? And of course everyone tells the truth in a post, right?? And if Bryant Edwards is your real name, you might want to be smarter with your public records online; that's not very safe these days you know. And "yawl" is accepted spelling of y'all which really is a contraction of the words "you" and "all". If everyone from NJ went back we'd also take back one the most successful businesses in Wilson. Maybe you should think twice before commenting.

She is completely to blame for how this will affect her children. Being a 'good mom' can mean different things. If by being a 'good mom' means you shower your kids with expensive toys, clothes, gifts, and spoil them and have several plastic surgeries to 'improve' your appearance, all with stolen money, then I sadly am not a 'good mom'...... I'll stick with being an honest one who leads my children by example.

Bottom line....if they didn't have the books and records she would not have been charged. Its just sad people are making Bass Appliance out to be the bad guy. They did nothing but place their faith in what they thought to be a loyal employee. She took advantage of her position and the trust they placed in her. It doesn't matter where Mr. Bass lives or how many houses he owns, he is a successful business man that has WORKED for his money. She did nothing but STEAL to get what she wants. Im sure her husband had to know something was going on for her to be brining in all this money, he was probably too worried about making it to the YMCA to lift weights. New house, new cars and if she had some surgery...it was bad surgery!!! Whew... I am sure that new house of hers has appliances from the store she worked at for years. It would be awesome if they could trace the money back to purchases made for the car/house and seize those items. Maybe she won't be walking around Wilson with her head held so high any longer. I do wish people would leave her children out if it, unfortunately they are innocent victims of their mothers very selfish act of greed!!! She might need to try to keep up with the Jones but learn to live within her means. I am sure someone will be able to buy that nice house out of foreclosure very very soon!!!

She wasn't getting rich as an office manager at a appliance/tanning bed business. Even if she is making payments, she still should not have stolen something that was not hers.
Why do you people keep making excuses for what she did?

No where else on earth does everyone know everything all the time and kick you hard when you are down.
Where we discover the jealous and zealous are only pious when it's their turn to stand up and testify on Sunday morning!
There is a process: Investigation, arrest, trial, sentence.
In Wiltson that process is something like this:
According to the jealous the Bass family should go to jail.
According to the zealous Sonya should go to jail.
According to the pious, well, the pious can't take thier eyes off of Sonya's rear end so I guess they don't count.

I don’t always agree with the things that the WDT prints. But this lady was charged with embezzling over $300,000.00 dollars. She is living well beyond her means. Some, if not all of that money, was surely used to pay for that house, cars, etc. That makes those items evidence of the crime she committed and should be published in the paper. I am also sorry for her kids, but the other kids are going to find out about this whether the picture of the house is in the paper or not.

Agreed that the bond should have been set higher, but if I remember correct Mitchell did steal close to this same amount and fled the state, my guess that helped with a larger bond and sentencing. IF she did this, she will be found guilty, but those blaming the Bass family, come one! They are a great Local Family owned business and I am sure they were missing the money. These are usually extremely well thought out of plans that can even slide past audits and the only reason they get caught is because they start taking more and more each time they get away with it. You can't run around pointing figures until you discover the leak and where it is coming from. And whoever said something about the amount being nominal to the chesson agency, I am sure that amount would hurt any local business. I guess depending on the age of the criminal, restitution from an old criminal/felon probably won't add up to very much vs the damage caused. If Sonya or whoever did this is punished to the full extent of the law for trying to steal someones business and life away from them. Just imagine what people would say if Bass did go out of business, they could have lost their house, car, and complete way of living because of 1 greedy criminal. I don't know if the Bass family has children, but people are so concerned about the alleged thief's children, what about the children on the other side, no matter the age.

I've read all comments and for those who beleive for a minute that white collar crime is a form of charity or "Modern day Robin Hood" wealth distribution are out of your minds. It reminds me of a Stones song, you know the one, Sympathy for the Devil. Embezzelment is just a fancy word for STEALING and, IF found guilty in court, she deserves no less punishment than a Theif that robs a bank at gunpoint and speeds away with $367k in a sack. She just took her time, meticulously, and robbed Bass over a period of years. Same difference. You could almost say it was more deliberate and cunning than a robber because she had years to perfect it, cover it up, sleep on it, pray no one would catch her, and smile to her employers, kids, friends and family while spending someone elses hard-earned money. NEVER bite the hand that feeds (and houses) you and your family. Ever heard that one? Good people don't steal from employers that TRUSTED them to manage their business financials, re-hired them time and time again, and PAID them to do what every Able-Bodied American should do, work for their living. In the Olde days, you would loose a hand for stealing from your employer or neighbor. We've come a long way since then but, please, let's not minimize the crime. And to say that the Basses were to blame for not watching their money closer? Really? So, the robbed bank is guilty of not having enough security to stop the Thief, the guy robbed and shot on a street corner should have had a gun and been a better shot than his robber? Again, IF found guilty, please don't sympathize for Sonya, sympathize for the Basses as they will, most likely, never recoup thier losses or their trust for their employees.

Most of the time white collar crimes are settled outside of court. The Bass' could easily spend 100k fighting this in court even with good evidence. Its not the DA or government that let's the people go, its often the ones pressing the charges. It is not good business to have your business in the paper for embezzlement; it shows you are out of control and not having proper accounting checks and balances in place. Don't be surprised with a proper audit that this is not the only area of concern on their books.

It is public record where she lives even without WDT involved. Same with your place of residence. Takes seconds to fine it and with Google maps you can see what she had for dinner.

In the case of Sharon Mitchell during the sentencing process, Charles Thomas requested the max sentence because the amount of restitution would be nominal to the Chesson agency. Let’s see if the Bass family will ask for Blood the way the Chessons did. Review the court transcripts it’s in there.

Wow... seems to be a lot of hatred coming out of folks on this sore subject. I thnk some must b a bit bitter. Lets not show our childish ways to all of wilson. Mayb u have had a run in with her n she got the best of you. I for one is simply amazed of the hatred but you speak of doing time for a punishment but he who throw those stones need punishment. Lets all stop the criticism bcause of the run ins. Iv just never read such. This world is to small for such anger n we should pray that the truth come out. So much hate in this world. If she did it she will b punished if not then he who did will. If it takes till judgement day. So lets stop the hatred judging bcause of the run ins you mite had. And the children will be fine. They r for sure not on trial here. If they are made fun of then mayb we as parents need to set better examples bcause they do learn frm us n they show what they learn. N i would hate to know my child was one picking and tlkn. I would b embarresd. I for one know her children would not do such. Which is a great example of her being a parent. So we as adults should lev the stone throwing, name calling, hatred out. This is not for us to worry about. We should tend to our own business and make sure our lives dont get turned up side down bcause of a boss......

It sure isn't chump change peeps. I always felt they over charge for their stuff but that's them not me. I buy at Sears for the lower price.
Sonya did wrong and she should pay - yet Bass had to have known this all along. Most business people know to the penny what they have - most business people have a CPA for tax purposes etc and surely they would have caught it before the time period listed in the article..
What is the underlying problem with this story people? Is it Satin??

Did the newspaper really have to show her home where her children reside? Sure, write the story .... it is public record... but there is a moral line on printing the picture of the house.... Oh... but then again it IS the WDT.... Shame.... And In no way does that mean I think it is OK for her to embezzle any amount of money if she is in fact found guilty....

It seems to me the white collar crime in Wilson is getting totally out of control. Every time you turn around there's someone else on the front-page embezzling money in Wilson. Maybe if the DA's office did their job and the court system actually enforced the law, there would be less white collar crime in this county. All the deal making and plea bargaining going on in that courtroom is so ridiculous. Sonya deserves prison time. She stole over $367k for Gods sake. For what? So she can have a big house in a fancy neighborhood with a pool? New cars? And let's not forget all that plastic surgery I'm sure Bass Appliance paid for! Who in Wilson County makes enough money working as an Office Manager to afford all those elaborate things! It's funny to me Sharon Mitchell stole over $100k from the Chesson Agency and got 6-8 years in prison. She didnt get a deal. She got time. This common thief stole over $300k! I would suggest the prosecutors look at the facts and evidence in this case and hand down the just punishment she so readily deserves-PRISON! If not, the courts and judicial system are doing the citizens of Wilson County a huge injustice! She thought about no one but herself and her selfish wants and needs. Not her children, not her family-no one. Now her children will suffer from her selfish self absorbed actions! I hope you get the just punishment you deserve stealing from the Bass family Mrs. Jackson. Maybe an example should be made out of you so the white collar crime will decrease in this county a bit

There is no excuse. She would still be stealing from the Basses today if she had not been caught red-handed. I'm glad she is a good mother to her children because she surely wasn't a good employee to her employer. I have several words for her and "nice" is not one of them

Innocent or guilty the courts can and will decide. However, I think it is in poor taste to show her home and address because she obviously has children at home. This is truly a very sad story for everyone. I personally know the Bass family and they are honest and hardworking people. No one knows all the extra time and effort that is put into their family owned business and to have a trusted and long time employee take that amount of money is not only frustrating but also very hurtful to all that trusted her. I hope she realizes how much pain she has caused everyone. If you feel sorry for anyone, feel sorry for the family that had their lives turned upside down because of this.

She is a great Mom that loves her chidren, and has a kind heart. Money is the root of all evil. Do not judge her, pray for everyone involved, especially her precious little boy who will probably suffer the most! What mistake will you or your family make tomorrow? Saddens my heart! In a time like this, everyone should not be throwing stones....God teaches us lessons through others, Watch,Listen, Learn and Pray that this will never be your family-child, husband, wife, mother etc.

The tax value is $298,439 and their bill this year is $3,715.56. My husband and I live in a home that is valued at $92,000 and our cars are paid for. We file jointly income taxes and know what the other have in money and expenses. If you live within your means and be grateful for what you have, you will have a happy life.

Unfortunately for the Basses, there are good people in this world who actually trust people, especially people who pretend to care about them and has been with them for 20 years. My daddy was the same way and people took advantage of him too. It is amazing what people can do to cover up things when they know enough about a business, and I believe 20 years would provide that kind of knowledge. And don't blame the Bass family, lots of other local businesses have been through the same thing, look at Chesson not long ago. There are others as well. Good people who trust their employees. It is a shame that someone took advantage of that trust for their own benefit. Many of us have fallen on hard times and lost everything we owned but didn't resort to stealing from others to make our lives better. It's called morals. If found guilty of these charges I hope she gets every day in prison possible. There is NO excuse for taking from anyone, especially those who gave you a chance, respect and unconditional support. Shame!

The last person I saw that was accused of taking that much money from a local business had a bond over $300K. Why was her bond so much lower? It’s all in who you know in Wilson. If she makes a deal I can’t wait to see how much time she gets. I bet it’s not nearly as much as the lady I am thinking of. 6-8 years is the minimum for this amount on a deal. Side deals and sorry DA’s going after people based on who their friends are.

It happens all the time and at several businesses in town including some Fortune 100 companies. Usually in mom and pop stores too much trust is given to people that seem trustworthy. If true, its a sad day when someone like that steals from the owners and probably smiled at the owners every day she walked through the door. I don't know about you but my conscience would never let me do something like that. If true, I guess we know that this person's ethics are about the same as any other robber out there. On the bright side, if anyone likes her home I bet you can get it for a good price 6 months from now.
