High school coach accused of sexual act

GOLDSBORO — A basketball coach at Eastern Wayne High School has been charged in a sexual assault investigation.

Glen Isaac Darden, 59, of 2524 H.B. Lewis Road north of Clinton, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of taking indecent liberties with a student. Darden committed a sexual act against a female student Dec. 12 on school grounds, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

The girl reported the alleged assault to the school resource officer on Dec. 13, sheriff’s Maj. Tom Effler said. Deputies say the student is younger than 16.

Darden was placed on paid administrative leave Dec. 13, Wayne County Public Schools spokesman Ken Derksen said. School officials placed him on unpaid leave following the Wednesday arrest.

Darden is an instructional assistant at Eastern Wayne and has worked at the school since March 2003. He also has served as head boys’ varsity basketball coach since 2012. Derksen said Darden has coached basketball there since starting work.

Darden was booked into the Wayne County Jail in Goldsboro under a $1,000 secured bond.

?Sure he wasn't sleeping said...

Are you sure he wasn't sleeping at the time it occurred. He looks like he is sleeping now. Maybe he should use the Ambien/Cold Medicine defense. In reality, I never understood pedophiles and other sexual deviants. I guess you have to be one to understand. Eeeeew gross! Prayers for the family.
