Scammer claims to collect for firefighters

A scammer who says he’s collecting donations for new firefighting equipment is not doing so on behalf of Wilson Fire and Rescue Services, officials said Thursday.

City residents told The Wilson Times that a man knocked on the door of their Raleigh Road Parkway home Monday seeking donations for city of Wilson fire equipment.

"We don’t do any soliciting of monies from the public for anything,” Deputy Fire Chief Tracy Mosley said. "We have not and do not. That’s pretty much cut and dried.”

Firefighters said residents approached by anyone claiming to seek donations for a city of Wilson department should report the visit to Wilson police.

The Raleigh Road Parkway couple, who asked that their names not be used, said the scammer was a white man in his late 20s to early 30s with short, dark hair and was driving a white compact car.

Residents who are asked to make contributions to city agencies can call the Wilson Police Department at 399-2323.

I bought a photo from Wilson County Rescue Squad and it was a legitimate fundraiser for them. Unfortunately the company that they did business with are now "no longer in service" so I am unable to get the disk with the photos that I paid for. But hey! WVRS got their money.

If he comes to your home call 911. Give them his description, vehicle description and if possible plate number, and direction of travel.

Wilson County Rescue Squad takes donations when they do pictures yes. They were doing a picture drive but it is no longer going on. Wilson Fire and Rescue does not do pictures nor do they go around collecting. One key thing is to make sure they have the picture information and are able to show some sort of ID and proof they are supporting any department. People doing this type of scamming will surely hurt the departments that do fundraiser such as this. What a shame...

I had a guy come to my house several weeks ago asking for donations for a volunteer fire department. I gave a donation only to find out volunteer fire departments don't even go to fires in the city. What a rip off!!!!

Thanks for the info...I researched and my check was written to wilson volunteer rescue. however, that guy was in our neighborhood off of Lake Wilson Road and acted as if he were strung out on drugs...sweating profusely and said he only took cash. This was back in late October and he was also driving a white compact car.

He showed up at our house in Dewfield last night. My husband said he thought he was strange acting and he was definitely driving a compact white car. Left it running in the driveway and came to the back door instead of our front door.

That is "Wilson County Rescue", a volunteer rescue squad, not
"Wilson Fire/Rescue Services", the city fire department.

I remember that same guy last week. He was driving a small white car. He showed up at our house too but I don't think he got any money from my Inlaws.

Corey that is not true at all! They need to clarify that! I've given money before years ago and actually had family pictures made out there in their building (across from where the new Waffle House is now). They came by last year about this same time although I haven't seen anyone so far this year.

No we actually did the same thing, and donated to a local volunteer fire dept are they actually did do pictures!!!

Wilson Fire and Rescue told us the agency has never solicited for funds door-to-door. Who was the check made out to? You may want to get a copy of the canceled check from your bank and provide it to the police department for investigation.

It was probably someone from a volunteer fire department. They are always coming around asking for money or selling plates.

A lady came to my house claiming to represent Wilson Fire and Rescue back in October and I wrote her a check and the check was deposited. If there is no such soliciting from this group, then I wonder where my money went. She also had some sort of family photo that I could have taken, but told her I wasn't interested in that. Was this a scam too?

He looked weird and and came last year for the animal control. There is a no soliciting law for the City of Wilson and I was going to take his picture. But I thought he was a drug addict or a dumb criminal trying to target the elderly so I said "I better leave him alone"... cause he may be strung out on something. My 4 year old was with me at the door.
