Whenever someone replies with a personal attack and no rebuttal or Poppins facts, it just confirms I was right. Thanks, I appreciate it. And I never said "big college" in any of my posts. Top ranked colleges are what we are talking about. Get on board with the conversation.

You, with your "big college" mentality, are pathetic.

"I would hire ANYONE from those schools (UNC, Duke, NCSU, Wake Forest), long before I'd hire some of you from your "small" schools." Yep, I said it and I also said “some of you” and I was referring to college graduates. If you're in the market for a new job, you know how important it is for your resume to stand out from the pack. Findings from "2013 Job Outlook," a study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), suggest that certain degrees from certain academic establishments may put you in a better position for employment than others. Trust me, your HR department is well aware of this but they are only a component in the hiring process, the hiring manager makes the final determination, HR checks the details and fairness behind the decision. Finding average employees is easy; finding exceptional employees, as every business owner knows, is exceptionally difficult. The fact you don’t know this is hopefully because you are not in the position to hire (I hope) and you are not looking a job. Does it matter where we go to college? Yes. If you are going to go to college, and take on a bunch of debt, and sit in classes for four years not making money… then for the love of God, go to a good one. Again I said “some”. Why are colleges ranked? Why do some of the top colleges require such high entrance requirements? Why do top people in senior classes in high school get into these colleges when others can’t? To be clear, I never said anything about these schools guaranteeing successful employment but I can assure you as a new college graduate with high unemployment, where you went to school does make a difference. Is it fair? Eh, that’s another discussion.

What on Earth do you mean by "I would hire ANYONE from those schools (UNC, Duke, NCSU, Wake Forest), long before I'd hire some of you from your "small" schools." So that is the only criteria you would look at? What a bumb statement! Boy, I'm glad you are not in HR at my company. I hope you are not in HR anywhere. What shortsightedness.

Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 12:50 PM said...

You can't throw the baby out with the bath water. Accolades speak for itself from UNC CH, Duke, NCSU, Wake Forest, etc. ALL have had issues from time to time but the majority of graduates have gone on to do great things in society with a solid education and it is not easy getting into those schools. I'd hire anyone from those schools, long before I'd hire some of you from your "small" schools. And we are NOT elite athletes posting here. Michael Jordan certainly has not been a disgrace because someone thinks he can only read to a 4th grade education. Tell him that to his face and call me when you do. he he. You know people are desperate when they comment about a handful of athletes to prove a broad point. I think you've already confirmed you speak statistics on a 4th grade level. Again I say, name your college and let's talk about it, deal?

Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 9:06 AM said...

The fact that some Chapel Hill fans say "Well, it's OK since other schools do it", speaks volumes to those fans acceptance of academic fraud. However, it is my suspicion that most of those "fans" never attended Chapel Hill. Most of the real Chapel Hill alumni I've spoken to on this topic are embarrassed by how these athletic and academic scandals have destroyed their school's reputation.

So all "Major Universities" are frauds? The small school I attended definately didn't allow this type of double standard. And by the way, matriculation causes blindness. Is that what those UNC players were doing when they were supposed to be in class?

Monday, January 20, 2014 at 9:07 PM @ Student of History said...

Totally agree. I took a class at NCSU where athletes received 'study guides' for tests that were actually a copy of the test with the questions in a different order. Of course, there were many that tried cozying up to the athletes in hopes of scoring a look at them, and once seen, were distributed among the students. Also witnessed first hand papers submitted in advanced classes bearing the signs of a limited grade school education. We received them in a peer review process, and many of us were astounded to encounter such a paper at that level. It's sickening the double standards that go on at all major universities, but it boils down to money, and unfortunately the hypocrisy will continue, with only a few lampooned as a public example.

Sunday, January 19, 2014 at 4:49 PM TheUBaby@Student of History said...

And some universities have phoney no-show classes to keep their athletes eligible. They even let them get degrees using credits from those classes. Know which one I am referring to here?

Sunday, January 19, 2014 at 4:33 PM Student of History said...

All major universities have two standards; one for revenue generating athletes and one for everyone else. Some are more blatant/open about it, but it is at every school.
Anyone who thinks differently has never matriculated at a major university.

Your stats on the number of government and legal officials who have come through Carolina are pretty telling. (and don't forget the journalists) We can easily see how the school has gotten away with this sham for so long. Yes, I now question the validity of a degree from UNC. I'm not the only one. Force them to clean up their act if you want us to feel otherwise. Sorry if I came across a little rude. It's been a long week and I feel like I might be coming down with something. I took a couple of Advil and that helped, but I'm just worn out. In addition, the dog is acting like she's peed on the carpet; but, I can't locate it.

UNCheater will never be the school THE U is. And what good are graduation rates when no show/sham classes- that one is from one of your own, Michael McAdoo -are used to gain credits for phoney graduations. Makes you want to question any degree from that place. What a joke your UNCheater party line explanation is. THE U rules, baby!!

By turning out some really great graduates, do you mean ones like: Makhtar Ndiaye (remember when he falsely accused the BYU player of spitting in his face and using a racial slur?); Rasheed Wallace (led the NBA in technicals for many years); Rashad McCants, P.J. "Smokey Thug" Harriston and . . . Do I need to go on. I know you are proud.

It is called "sales" and exposure. WDT without readers, they would not exist. And they do focus on the news. One article on basketball tickets vs. the millions of articles on news over the years. You do the math (if you can). If its not news, then quit commenting on it.

Considering all this press coverage, those "Likes" on Facebook must be worth a fortune. So that's where all the wealth has been hiding! "Liking" Facebook pages will be the cure for all of the economic woes in our society!
Here's an idea. Spend more time focusing on the news and less time on nonsense such as this contest. It would be nice to see more news updates on this website occasionally.

The Wilson Daily Times, with all of their grammatical errors and general butchering of the English language, fits quite well with the recent controversy surrounding the reading ability of UNC-CH student-athletes. Way to tie in those current events!

Where did you go to college? Be fair and let us know so we can compare, okay? As I said in a previous posts, the majority of accepted students had a GPA of 3.7 or higher, an SAT score (CR+M+W) above 1750, and an ACT composite score of 25 or higher. The proof is in their graduates. I am a 1980 UNC grad and also a Duke Fuqua School of business MBA grad ('96). You?

Great thing and a great school! It’s been here since 1789 and turned out some really great graduates. I agree with "UNC" post that you could go a long time before you found another school with as much accolades. Why some want to pull their paper subscription because of basketball tickets is silly at best. Really? Think there are more serious things to talk about folks. Did you go to UNC Chapel Hill? I would assume you did not and probably because you didn't have the academics requirements to attend. With the grammatical errors on most of your posts, it appears many here write at a 4th grade level. Where did you go to college?

Athletic students are a very small part of the total population and a UNC diploma is valuable in the workforce. I also think very highly of NCSU, Wake Forest, and Duke. We have excellent schools in our area. Where did you go to college? As far as UNC, you'd be hard pressed to find a better education. With an acceptance rate near 30%, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is one of the most selective public universities in the country. The majority of accepted students had a GPA of 3.7 or higher, an SAT score (CR+M+W) above 1750, and an ACT composite score of 25 or higher. The proof is in their graduates. They have more Rhodes Scholars than any other public research school in the nation for the past 25 years. 36 governors had a UNC diploma, 83 US Representatives, 34 Fed Judges, 14 senators, and list goes on and on. Knock it all you want, I'm betting none of you went there and could not get accepted even if you wanted to go there.

Being a newspaper subscriber requires the ability to read, otherwise what is the point of a subscription. Recent news out of UNC-CH is that a lot of their revenue sport student athletes lack the ability to read at a college level, much less high school / middle school levels. Maybe the WDT needs to find another team to give away tickets to as part of some promotion?
