Police investigate killing in Wilson park

Wilson police are investigating the fatal shooting of a young man that happened late Tuesday in Freeman Park.

The body of Estevan Martinez, 20, of 1210 Woodard Ave., was found near the children’s playground equipment. A second young man, Douglas Castro Medina, 18, of 910 Wainwright Ave., received minor injuries, according to police.

Officers kept expanding the crime scene boundaries as they started trying to figure out what had happened.

The shooting was dispatched shortly before 10 p.m. The call initially came in as shots fired, according to police.

Neighborhood residents and even those from blocks away who heard the shots fired followed the emergency vehicles and lights to the park.

Teresa Lucas was at a Bingo parlor on U.S. 301 near McDonald’s. She was outside when she heard multiple shots ring out. The shots sounded so close she considered going back inside.

Lucas came to the park because she was worried for her nephew’s safety. He lives in the neighborhood around the park.

"God knows it was a lot of shots,” Lucas said. "It was loud.”

Lucas and her daughter watched and listened as family and friends of the young man who was killed arrived at the park. Their cries and screams piercing the night air, at least one fell to the ground as they saw the young man’s body, which by then had a white sheet draped over it.

Lucas walked over to the mourners hoping to offer some support. But she said they were speaking Spanish and she couldn’t understand them.

"I wanted to just grab her and hug her,” Lucas said of one of the young women in the group.

Lucas talked about the toll gang-related shootings are taking on the community.

"This don’t make no sense,” she said.

There’s no official word yet on whether this fatal shooting is gang related.

Freeman Park, which is owned by the city of Wilson, doesn’t have any lights in it so it was difficult for the people who gathered to see. Officers scoured the area near the body and beyond using flashlights. Wilson Fire/Rescue Services brought in a mobile command center.

The park is bordered by Freeman, Woodard and Finch streets.

Dozens of police officers arrived at the scene following the shootings, including Police Chief Thomas Hopkins, who first confirmed police were investigating a homicide.

Teresa Hinnant, a Lane Street resident, was inside her home when she heard seven or eight shots ring out.

"It was loud,” she said.

Hinnant said she saw nothing, no vehicles leaving the area. She only heard the gunshots.

"I came out looking around here,” she said as she stood in the street with neighbors.

Hinnant said lights need to be installed at the park. It makes her feel uneasy knowing someone had been killed.

"It’s terrible,” she said. "Whoever it is needs to be locked up and put behind bars.”

Police ask anyone with information regarding this incident to call 252-399-2323 or Crime Stoppers.

Funny. You refer to people out that time of night as "lil hood rats" yet the kid that got shot was out that time of night as well. Coincidence?

I just hope there will be justice done for steve. And not put to the side like all the other cases police think is not important . But trust and belive this will not go away family will not rest till they see someone behind bars!! And the crazy thing about the police in wilson is that they are always up and down those streets at those hours because of all the lil hoodrats roaming the streets. And on 9/24/13 the day a brother a friend someone that was truly loved got taken away police was no where near! Smh

Respect for a human life said...

Just want to express my deepest condolences. It is sad any time a young person looses their life. Weather it was a drive by or a targeted hit the fact remains that it was intentional. The person responsible has no respect for a human life. I hope he asks God for forgiveness and that God grants it to him. I know it will be hard for the family of this young man to forgive. As for the others that did not pull the trigger and were involved I’m sorry you made the choice to go on this venture you too need to be praying for forgiveness. YOU TOOK A LIFE! I am a parent of a 20 year old young man that has made his fair share of mistakes. My son has been in the wrong place at the wrong time a few times and could have been a target, because he liked to run his mouth. I can’t help but think that could have been my son in that park late at night hanging out. Boys with guns should be out hunting animals and not people. Gangs are the best example of a week mind. People that can’t think for themselves individually and can’t function in society because of low self esteem or no self respect or no respect for life in general join gangs.

You are right. That being said the first step is to ween people off of total aid. The best way to teach responsibility is to remove the safety net that is an excuse for everything that happens. It will hurt for the first 10-15 years but its the only way another generation will not be lost. When lawyers and the system are representing families, father and sons, it is a problem and the head has to be cut off the snake.
Also there is no fear of consequences as a result. It used to be that people were scared to act bad because some adult who saw it happen would tell your parents. Now that parent is a busy body, invading someone's privacy and chastized by the bad actors parent, news and legal system. It is a lost cause until personal responsibility and a practice of families raising their children, not the community or government being responsible.

And that is the sad part. Most of these gang bangers have had very little guidance from any kind of parent. It is a shame there is a whole generation that is being brought up as nothing more than another mouth to feed. Disagree if you want but the proof is on the front page every day.

You are right. Its those judges taking over these people's bodies and making them pull the trigger. There was an episode of ghost hunters on tv and the same thing was happening. I didn't go to school because teacher didn't come and put me in a car and make sure I did my homework and take me to school.
