Sri Lanka night held at club meeting By Hilary Hellens | Daily Times Staff Writer If you're not careful, monkeys will steal your food. This is just one of the things that Sri Lankan native Udeshi Kotuwegedera shared about Sri Lanka with about 40 people gathered at the St. Alphonsus African Ancestry Ministry Thursday night for Around the World in Wilson's Sri Lanka night. Around the World in Wilson is a group that was formed by the Wilson Human Relations office. Kotuwegedera, who works for the Wilson Arts Council and came to the United States as a Barton student, gave a presentation about Sri Lanka that featured curry prepared by her. Her hour-long presentation covered many aspects of life in Sri Lanka, including its culture, politics and architecture. She said that most people in the country travel by horse and buggy. "This is the best four-by-four you get in Sri Lanka," she said with a laugh. "What is the gas mileage?" joked Zhixiong Cai in the audience. "I think it's important that people are aware of other cultures in this time and day," said Kotuwegedera. "I learned that they have different money than we do," he said. Cai said he enjoys coming to Around the World in Wilson's international nights with his wife. "I have been a regular," he said. "We have attended five or six. We enjoy meeting different people." Around the World in Wilson meets the second and fourth Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. The group is open to anyone who wants to join. Hilary@wilsontimes.com | 265-7868
