Remember mothers By Rev. Archie Logan Greetings! On Sunday, May 11, 2008, we celebrate Mother's Day. Let me invite those of you who have living mothers, grandmothers, guardians or special mothers in your life to join them in worship. Praise and thank God for your mother. If you do not have a church family, the officers and members of Johnson Chapel Church, Elm City, invites your family to join us on Mother's Day. We celebrate mothers because they are beautiful people; they are loving individuals; and despite all of their struggles, sorrows, pains, disappointments and frustrations, they continue to love their children -- regardless! I believe that because of mothers' "regardless," we must celebrate and recognize them. Every mother has favor with God; birth continues to be a miracle from God. Mary the mother of Jesus Christ sang a song of joy to God because of her favor with God to bare the Christ child. (Luke 1:34-55) Mary demonstrated spiritual commitment and loyalty to God. She was an unwed, pregnant virgin. She was engaged to be married to Joseph, but she was the bride of God. The love Mary had for her unborn child demonstrates that she placed her relationship with God before anything else: social rejection; questions of her virginity; family and community gossip; ad the scorn of the "church." In today's society, many unwed, pregnant women make a choice of love for the children they bear. I do not want to engage in the "abortion/choice" debate. Yet for countless numbers of us on the planet many mothers without husbands, family and political correctness about the birthing process have, by the miracle of God, been the vessel of life for their children. If not for the grace of God, that despite the expectations of society about marriage, family and children, life still comes, if God wills! Children do not belong to their parents; they belong to God. My mother went to be with the Lord over 20 years ago, but I still think about her daily, I see her; I hear her prayers; I listen to the songs she sang. If your mother is still in "the land of the living," remember her on Mother's Day! Start planning to show her some special love the weekend of May 11, 2008: Take her shopping; give her some cash money; share some of your valuable time with her; let her know that you love her and remember all she has done for you. For those of you who are estranged, alienated, separated, not speaking or on bad terms with your mother -- Get over it! Many women have done their best with their children. Circumstances beyond their control often prevent them from being the mothers they should be; nevertheless, she is still your mother. If your mother is not saved, invite her to join Jesus Christ this Mother's Day. Reach out to her and show spiritual love, understanding, kindness, compassion and forgiveness. God used her to give you an opportunity in this life to fulfill his purpose for your living. FROM THE PULPIT is a weekly feature of the Wilson Times.
