Mavis Harper Campbell

Nov. 16, 1916 -- May 10, 2008

ELM CITY -- Mavis Harper Campbell, 91, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Wilson Medical Center. Mavis was born in Edgecombe County on Nov. 16, 1916, to the late Elmo and Cora Harper.

Her life was centered on her family, the Elm City Methodist Church, and later in life, the Red Hots, a band made up of women in their 70s, 80s, 90s, and beyond, who played for groups, nursing homes, assisted living centers, churches, and other groups to entertain them, but at the same time, brought inspiration and hope to many.

She is survived by her sons and their families, Herbert and wife, Hertha, of Garner, and Robert and wife, Rosemary, of Efland; her grandchildren, Herbert Jr. and wife, Catherine, of Raleigh, Donna Hollenbach and husband, John, of Raleigh, James of Statesville, Laura Edgerton of Raleigh, and Rachael Edgerton of Chapel Hill; and great-grandchildren, Darby and Jackson Hollenbach of Raleigh. She will be missed by all.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Wilson, and a son, James Oliver. The family wished to express special thanks and appreciation to her caregivers over the past two years at Parkwood Village in Wilson.

The family will receive friends and family Wednesday, May 14, 2008, from 1-2 p.m. at Elm City Methodist Church with the funeral service following at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery. John B. Mathewson

Aug. 21, 1967 -- May 10, 2008

RALEIGH -- John Bain Mathewson, 40, died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 10, 2008.

A native of Roanoke, Va., he was born on Aug. 21, 1967. John was a graduate of Sanderson High School, where he excelled in athletics, especially soccer. He received a B.A. in communications from N.C. State University.

Professionally, he was employed with Everest Surgical Partners as a territory manager. Above all, John was devoted to family and friends and infused fun and inspiration into the lives of those he came in contact with.

He is survived by his mother, Carolyn Wright Creech, of Raleigh; stepfather, Charles Parker Creech of Raleigh; sisters, Sheri Shelton Satterwhite and husband, Charles Bynum Satterwhite, of Farmville and Kimberly Shelton Brown and husband, Scott Gerald Brown, of Mount Pleasant, S.C. Also surviving are five nieces and nephews, Bynum Mathewson Satterwhite, Katherine Steele Satterwhite, Elizabeth Schuyler Satterwhite, Elizabeth Bradley Brown, and William Scott Brown; and close family friend, Nancy Otero, of Raleigh.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Road, Raleigh, NC 27608. The Rev. Dr. Art Ross will officiate.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church.
