ROCKY MOUNT -- Mavis Harper Campbell, 91, died Saturday. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Elm City Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Johnson Funerals and Cremations.

Mary Whitaker, 50, of Avante At Wilson, formerly of 619 Benton St., died Tuesday. Arrangements are by Hamilton Funeral Chapel of Wilson.

ROCKY MOUNT -- James Calvin "Red" Toler, 71, died Monday. Arrangements are by Cornerstone Funeral Home and Cremations, 1052 S. First St., Nashville.

 

Charlie Sledge Sr.

LOUISBURG -- Charlie Cleveland Sledge Sr., 82, of 2988 Sledge Road, died Tuesday. The funeral will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Holly Grove Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Spring Hope Funeral Home.

 

James Oliver Cockrell Jr.

Sept. 19, 1949 -- May 12, 2008

TOWNSVILLE -- James Oliver Cockrell Jr., 58, died Monday. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Joyner's Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery, Nashville.

He was a graduate of UNC Charlotte and Florida State University, a veteran of the Vietnam War, and worked as a social worker in Warrenton and Halifax Counties.

Mr. Cockrell is survived by his wife, Cindy Brown Cockrell, and two daughters, Marissa Cockrell and Caitlin Cockrell, all of Townsville; two brothers, David Cockrell and wife, Tammy, of Burlington and Robert Cockrell and wife, Marie, of Charlottesville, Va.; three aunts, Ann Cockrell and Janice Watson, both of Wilson, and Jean Stone of Bailey; an uncle, Cecil Brantley, of Pine Level; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Rachel B. Cockrell.

The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Sunday at Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson, and at other times at 142 Waterway Lane, Townsville.

FARMVILLE -- Sam Johnson, 88, of 8308 Highway 258 N., died Thursday, May 8, 2008. The funeral will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Hornes Funeral Home. Arrangements are by Hornes Funeral Home of Farmville.

 

Alvin Howard Griffiths

Alvin Howard Griffiths, 80, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2008.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Hughes Griffiths.

Mr. Griffiths is survived by two daughters, Nancy Griffiths of Wilson and Kathy Kratky and husband, Rich, of Synprius, N.Y.; son, David Griffiths and wife, Elaine, of Currituck; five grandchildren, Karen, Daniel, Evan, Steven and Jason; and two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Emily.

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one's favorite charity. There will be no visitation. Arrangements by Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Home. Condolences may be made to www.thomasyelverton.com.
