Retread study justified, will save money I happened to read the editorial in the Wilson Times (5/1/08) and was shocked at how a newspaper makes its recommendations for political office in North Carolina. It appears you are not supporting her candidacy for U.S. Senate because she supported something that is right for N.C. taxpayers. There is one thing for sure I can say about Sen. Kay Hagan: She avoids playing favorites with political interest groups, and votes for what is best for all of North Carolina. In 2006 the state auditor stated that the state's 30 year retread supplier may have overcharged the state for $361,000.00 worth of spot repairs. As a result of these unusual billings the Joint Legislative Transportation Committee requested a $110,000 study of the state retread specifications and retread bid process. Smithers Scientific (Akron, Ohio) did the study and was completely independent in their analysis and findings. The resulting study from Smithers indicated that there are other as safe retread products in the marketplace, providing 40 percent lower cost per mile of operation. Forty percent fewer retreads purchased by N.C. schools would result in an annual savings of $1,200,000. The study also pointed out there is "no economic benefit for separate invoicing of spot repairs." Senator Hagan's support of the Smithers study will ultimately save N.C. taxpayers about $1,200,000 a year in fewer retreads purchased and $4,600,000 over the four-year contract period. I applaud Senator Hagan's support of this study. She is what we need in Washington to look after N.C. interests. Russ Hunt Senior Vice President Greensboro
