Televise school board meetings now Dr. Price wants the televising of School Board meetings to be a school/student activity at the Academy of Performing Arts. That means money must be spent on televising equipment and right now the money just isn't there. City Council offered their facility to televise school board meetings a couple of years back. The school officials said it would be too "inconvenient." They found so many excuses not to televise and ignored the offer from City Council. Now televising is back on the table, and excuses are beginning again. What is more important, a little "inconvenience," or allowing the public to be included in education? Why would they not want to televise board meetings? Could it be that they are afraid to show how unfriendly and prohibitive school board meeting are? Could it be that people will see that board policies restrict comments or discussions from the public? Could it be that people would actually see that questions are rarely, if ever, answered by board members? Could it be that televising would show the actual attendance (or lack of) at the board meetings? Just what could it be? We need the meetings televised now. No more excuses. I believe City Council would still offer their facility if asked. The equipment is in place and already paid for by taxpayer dollars. The School Board meetings could be held at the City Council facility, (two blocks from the current board room) recorded live and then replayed on the school Channel 22. Win, win for everyone and much more economical. The schools would save money and the meetings could be on the air right away. The opportunity for students to apprentice with the technicians at the City Council facility could come later. With the academies "redo" and upcoming changes, parents need to be informed and feel included in the process. This televising idea could go a long way to assist in the success of the academies and improve school board relations with the public. It is worth a try. Don't spend monies for duplication or televising equipment that we can't afford; talk to City Council first. Students and school staff have had a lot of "inconvenience" this past year. Now, "for the betterment of education," and to save money, the school board should consider a little "inconvenience" and use the council facilities. No excuses. Kay Hannaford Somerset Drive
