'Golden Platter' performs downtown Saturday

A member of the legendary Platters as well local bluegrass musicians will perform the first two Saturday afternoons of Theater of the American South.

Milton Bullock, the "Golden Platter," will take the stage this Saturday. Regular performers at the County Line Bluegrass Barn will perform May 24.

The performances will run from 4 to 5:30 pm at the Farris & Farris parking lot (Nash Street at Tarboro Street) in downtown Wilson. The performances are free and open to the public.

The Platters topped the pop charts in the 1950s and '60s. They sold tens of millions records of nearly 400 songs. Their hits included "Only You," "The Great Pretender" and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." Bullock sings these favorites and many more.

Wilson County has a strong bluegrass tradition. Music at the County Line Bluegrass Barn on Hornes Church Road draws devoted fans from throughout the county and beyond.

The May 17 and May 24 performances follow the 2 p.m. matinee of the play "Fair and Tender Ladies." Following the music, the Playhouse will present a dinner/theater production of the first act of its hit, "The Dixie Swim Club."
