The Baltimore Orioles recalled former Beddingfield standout Freddie Bynum Wednesday night to take over as the team's starting shortstop.
After hitting a home run in Wednesday's game for the Double-A Bowie Baysox, Bynum got the call to rejoin the parent club in time for Thursday's game against the Royals.
Bynum contributed immediately in his first game back, going 2 for 4 with a run scored.
Baltimore manager Dave Trembley told MLB.com that a change was in order.
"To be honest with you, there have been a lot of plays that could've been made and should've been made that weren't made," Trembley said." So we gotta try something different. That's it."
Bynum played six games in a rehab stint and was given the chance to start at short after the O's send Eider Torres to Triple-A Norfolk.
Luis Hernandez, who has gotten most of the starts at the position, was benched.
In a utlitly role last season, Bynum committed just one error in 70 games and hit .260 in 96 at-bats.
Bynum was a second-round pick in 2000 out of Pitt Community College.
