Greenfield finishes second in CPIC boys tennis tournament

Despite falling in Saturday's conference finals, the Greenfield boys tennis team racked several individual honors to go along with its regular-season team title.

Making the 1-A Coastal Plain Independent Conference all-conference team from the Knights were No. 2 Robert Daniel, No. 3 Clayton Stakes, No. 4 Mitchell Sheets, No. 5 John Dandanell and No. 6 Cameron Homes. Stakes, Sheets, Dandanell and Homes all had the best record in their flight during the regular season, which earned them the honor along with the No. 1 seed in their flight.

Dandanell finished 7-0 in singles and teamed with Stakes to go 7-0 in doubles.

"The guys faced this season, and (Saturday's final) was no different," Greenfield head coach Will Cobb said of his team's loss to Kerr-Vance without Homes, who was attending a wedding. "Despite not having Cameron, we were still right in the thick of things. We just needed a few more wins, especially head-to-head against Kerr-Vance.

"We had the opportunities, but we just couldn't capitalize on them. ... I'm disappointed for them, but we'll bounce back and have a good week of practice to prepare for the state tournament at Barton."

The Knights (10-4) will play Friday and Saturday in the NCISAA 1-A state tennis tournament at the Barton College Tennis Complex.

Faith Christian's Andy Figlewski was named CPIC Player of the Year, while Wayne Country Day's Kristen Tyndell earned Coach of the Year.

Kevin Martell was named CPIC tournament MVP, winning both his singles and doubles flights.
