Mudcats beat Suns

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Manuel Mayorson doubled twice in a 3 for 3 performance to lead the Carolina Mudcats past the Jacksonville Suns, 6-3, in a Double-A Southern League professional baseball game before an announced attendance of 9,489 at the Baseball Grounds on Friday night.

Carolina (20-15) never trailed in claiming the five-game series with three wins.

Gaby Sanchez delivered a run-scoring single with two outs in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 Mudcats lead.

After the Suns (16-19) tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first, Carolina regained the lead on Kris Harvey's run-scoring grounder in the fourth.

With the score knotted at 2-2, the Mudcats claimed the lead for keeps in the sixth. Sanchez opened the inning with a single, stole second base, moved to third on Lee Mitchell's grounder and scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.

Harvey then doubled and came home on the second of Mayorson's three hits.

The Mudcats added two runs in the ninth. Chris Coghlan slapped a run-scoring single with two outs and Carolina also scored on a wild pitch.

Carolina returns to Zebulon and Five County Stadium at 6:15 this evening to oppose the Chattanooga Lookouts.
