Theater of the American South: Schedule of Events, May 15 through June 1

PLAYS

"Steel Magnolias" will be presented each Thursday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

"Fair and Tender Ladies" will be presented Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the shows are $20 and $18 for people aged 60 and older and students.

All of the shows are at the Edna Boykin Cultural Center on Nash Street.

 

CONCERTS

Free Southern-themed musical performances will be offered this Saturday and Saturday, May 24, at 4 p.m. in the Arts Council block of downtown.

 

DINNER THEATER

The first act of "The Dixie Swim Club" will be performed this Saturday and Saturday, May 24, at 5:30 p.m. at Imagination Station Museum.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased only at the Wilson Arts Center. Seating is limited and reserved. For ticket information, call The Playhouse at 291-8951 or The Wilson Arts Center at 291-4329.

 

LECTURE SERIES

Lectures are at the Ragan Writing Center on the campus of Barton College and are free and open to the public.

Saturday, Lee Smith will talk about her book "Fair and Tender Ladies," at 10 a.m.

Saturday, May 24, East Carolina professor Derek Aldersman will talk about the landscape of the American South at 10 a.m.

Saturday, May 31, F. Todd Lasseigne, executive director of the Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden in Kernersville will talk about Southern gardens at noon.

 

COOKING DEMONSTRATIONS

The noon to 1 p.m. sessions are at Imagination Station. The 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. are in private homes. Cost is $10 per person for the early sessions and $20 for the later sessions. Call 291-4329, ext. 10 for ticket information.

Saturday, Jason Smith, chef-proprietor of 18 Seaboard in Raleigh, will be giving the demonstrations.

Saturday, May 24, Stephen Ribustello, chef-propietor of On the Square in Tarboro, will be giving the demonstrations.

 

GOSPEL SERVICES

Block of Hope Southern Gospel Experience will be performing Sunday, Sunday, May 25, and Sunday, June 1, at 9:45 a.m. at Jackson Chapel First Baptist Church, 571 E. Nash St.

The services are free and open to the public.
