Spell doing well at Ohio Christian




Rickshontae Spell, a former three-sport standout at Hunt High School, is making his mark in basketball at Ohio Christian University, a member of the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association.

Spell helped the Trailblazers to a runner-up finish in the Association Christian Colleges Athletics tournament and landed on the All-ACCA Tournament team. Ohio Christian finished 20-16, its best season ever.

Additionally, Spell, the son of Cynthia Monk and Ricky Spell of Wilson, earned all-region and All-America honorable mention. The sophomore guard averaged 13 points and 4.7 assists for head coach Curtis Christopher's Trailblazers.

 

BATTS HELPS BISHOPS BATTLE

Catcher Justin Batts, a 2005 Wilson Christian Academy graduate, recently completed a stellar junior campaign with the N.C. Wesleyan College baseball team.

Batts led the NCAA Division III Bishops with 50 runs batted in while hitting .397 with three home runs and 13 extra-base hits.

The former Wilson American Legion Post 13 standout was selected to the All-USA South Conference second team. N.C. Wesleyan lost to Christopher Newport in the USA South tournament championship and finished with a 28-14-1 mark, missing the Div. III playoffs.

 

HELMS FINISHES 1ST YEAR AT GUILFORD

David Helms, a junior baseball player at NCAA Division III member Guilford College, recently completed his first season for the Quakers.

Helms, a Fike graduate who played at Pitt Community College, started 14 games at third base for Guilford. He compiled a .183 batting average and hit three home runs. His two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning sparked the Quakers to a 7-6 win against Methodist University.

The Quakers went 17-22 overall and 6-12 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Helms is expected to be among 36 lettermen returning next season under head coach Nick Black.

 

LANGLEY EARNS ALL-REGION X ACCLAIM; COOKE SIDELINED

April Langley, a freshman softball player at Pitt Community College, was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association's All-Region X second team.

Langley, a 2007 Fike graduate, led off and played centerfield for the Lady Bulldogs of head coach Junior Bailey. Langley led PCC in batting with a .359 average and home runs with seven. She also knocked 17 doubles, stole 25 bases and drove in 25 runs.

The Lady Bulldogs finished fourth in the Region X standings with a 15-11 mark while going 26-23 overall.

Nine players will return for Bailey next season, including 2007 Beddingfield graduate Ana Cooke, who missed this season with an elbow injury.

 

JACKSON UP FOR ALL-AMERICA HONORS

Mount Olive College softball player, Jenny Jackson, a 2005 Charles B. Aycock High School graduate, earned spots on two all-region teams and is now eligible for Div. II All-America honors, to be announced later this month.

Jackson was selected to the Daktronics Div. II All-South Atlantic Region first team as well as the first squad of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-South Atlantic Region team.

This season, Jackson tied an MOC record with 11 home runs while batting .385 with 46 RBIs. She led the Conference Carolinas with a 1.39 earned run average while posting a 16-11 mark and struck out 166 batters.

 

MINSHEW A MOUNT OLIVE MAINSTAY

Kelly Minshew, a Lady Trojans teammate of Jackson, completed a solid freshman season this spring. The 2007 Beddingfield High School graduate hit .347 with a Conference Carolinas-leading 17 doubles and drove in 17 runs as an infielder. Her 59 hits tied for the Conference Carolinas lead with three other players, including Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year Jessica McFadden of Barton.

She was fourth in total bases with 87
