UFC legend Severn to give seminar at Kai Thai Academy

Dan “The Beast” Severn, a member of the Ultimate Fighting Championships Hall of Fame, will be the guest instructor at a seminar at Kai Thai Academy in Wilson on Friday, July 11.

The event will start at 6 p.m. for Kai Thai Fight Team members and a second 90-minute session will begin at 7 p.m. for Kai Thai non-members. The preregistration fee is $40 per attendee. Preregistration is being held at Kai Thai at 306 E. Nash Street as well as Pendergrass Academy at 12339 Wake Union Church Road in Wake Forest.

Severn made his UFC debut in 1994 and, two years later, was crowned UFC Superfight Champion by defeating Ken Shamrock, “The World’s Most Dangerous Man.”

Severn began as a freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestler and won two national championships in high school. He continued on to Arizona State University, where he is a member of its wrestling hall of fame. He later coached at ASU and Michigan State University.

Severn won 13 national AAU titles in amateur wrestling before moving into mixed martial arts. He is a black belt in the disciplines of sombo, judo and jiu jitsu. He also stepped into the world of professional wrestling in the late 1990s, joining World Wrestling Federation and National Wrestling Alliance.

He built a training facility in his home state of Michigan where he trains individuals in martial arts, amateur and professional wrestling.
