Reid-Howard Memorial Classic on tap at Fike today

This afternoon, Fike High School will be the site of a series of all-star basketball games in memory of three of its former coaches Harvey Reid Jr., Jimmy Howard and Eddie Summerlin.

The Harvey Reid Jr. and Jimmy Howard Memorial Basketball Classic Benefit Game tips off at 2 p.m. with the middle school boys game, followed by the Eddie Summerlin girls game at 3.

The dunk and 3-point shooting contests start at 4, while the graduate boys game, featuring players from Hunt, Fike and Beddingfield, begins at 4:30.

At 5:30 p.m., former Fike players face off as the Reid team and Howard team, with the Wilson All-Stars, a local adult traveling team, facing the Hamm All-Stars, perennial summer league champions.

The event was begun by Reid in 1990 in memory of Howard, his longtime assistant coach. After Reid's death in 1992, his good friend Willie Watson continued the game out of respect for what these two men gave the community.

Proceeds from the game are used to help college-bound seniors, both girls and boys, cover expenses and to help area high school and middle school players attend camps, buy shoes and with other necessities.

The requested donation is $5 for ages 5 and older while those 4 and under will be admitted free of charge.
