Hillcats top Mudcats 5-4 in 10 innings

ZEBULON — The Lynchburg Hillcats knocked off the Carolina Mudcats 5-4 in 10 innings Friday night at Five County Stadium.

The loss could be devastating to the Mudcats’ playoff chances as Carolina dropped to 32-34 in the second half and 61-72 overall. The Mudcats are still one game behind Salem for the wildcard playoff berth from the Southern Division of the Carolina League.

Both teams have three games remaining. The Mudcats open their final regular season series at Five County Stadium on Saturday for the first of three against the Winston-Salem Dash.

Grant Sides (4-2) allowed the deciding run in the 10th on three hits.

Emerson Landoni opened the frame with a single to center and Will Skinner collected his second RBI of the night with a two-out hit to left.

Nate Hyatt (5-3) picked up the win after pitching two scoreless innings of relief.

Alex Wilson recorded the final two outs for his 16th save.

The Mudcats rallied to tie the score on three different occasions, but could never grab the lead. Starter Ryan Merritt allowed three runs, one earned, while working around eight hits across six innings. He walked one and struck out eight.

Lynchburg capitalized on an early error by James Roberts to take a 2-0 lead.

Roberts made up for his mistake by belting a long fly out to left for his fourth home run of the year to put the Mudcats on the board in the third.

Carolina used a miscue by the Hillcats to tie the game in the fourth.

Down 3-2 in the fifth, Carolina got consecutive doubles by Logan Vick and Yhoxian Medina in the bottom the inning squared the score.

Lynchburg went back ahead with a run off reliever Josh Martin in the seventh, and once more the Mudcats rallied in the last of the inning.

The team worked three straight walks to load the bases and Torsten Boss drove a sacrifice fly to deep left that scored Vick.
