Maybin, Mitchell blast Mudcats past Suns 11-1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The hot bats of Cameron Maybin and Lee Mitchell matched the outstanding mound effort by Ryan Tucker as the Carolina Mudcats scorched host Jacksonville 11-1 in Monday's Double-A Southern League baseball action.

Maybin and Mitchell had four hits each and combined to drive in seven runs while Tucker fired seven shutout innings to improve to 2-1.

The Mudcats (18-13) entered the game having lost eight of their last 10 but topped the Suns (14-17) for the fifth time in six 2008 meetings. Carolina is now 21/2 games behind North Division leaders West Tenn and Huntsville.

Maybin blasted a two-run home run in the first inning, his fourth of the season while left fielder John Raynor clubbed a two-run homer in the third. Both came against Suns starter Mario Alvarez (0-4), who yielded seven hits in four innings.

In his first at-bat, Mitchell grounded into a double play, started by his brother, Russell, the Jacksonville third baseman. But the Mudcats' Mitchell slapped out four straight hits, each driving in runs. He finished with five RBIs.

Maybin's first four-hit game at the Double-A level included a third-inning double. He scored four runs as the Mudcats equaled their season-best in runs and hits (15).

Maybin improved his batting 18 points from .224 to .262 while Mitchell's climbed from .200 to .246.

Tucker gave up three of the Suns' four hits and struck out five.

Russell Mitchell had a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning against Carolina reliever Carlos Martinez to sully the shutout, which could have been the Mudcats' fourth of the season.

The five-game series continues tonight at the Baseball Grounds with Chris Volstad (3-0, 2.61 earned run average) taking the mound for Mudcats while the Suns send James McDonald (1-1, 5.27).

First pitch is scheduled for 7:15.
