Saturday, February 04, 2012 1:40 AM New-look Cougars lose at Tarboro TARBORO — A new-look and much younger SouthWest Edgecombe varsity boys basketball team lost 76-62 at archrival Tarboro on Friday. With all but two players on the varsity suspended for disciplinary reasons by head coach Tom Wooten, the Cougars relied mostly on the newly promoted junior varsity players as they fell to 7-12 overall and 2-9 in 2-A Eastern Plains Conference play. Sophomore Fabian Bandy led SWE with 18 points to go with five rebounds, while John Jones chipped in seven points and 11 rebounds. “I told the guys, I almost feel like we won the ball game,” said Wooten, who iterated the suspensions were likely to be permanent. “A junior varsity, we’re out there with freshman and sophomores playing against juniors and seniors.” Varsity holdover Javin Hinton had 11 points and 10 rebounds while senior point guard Rashad Whitaker, the other remaining member, had 14 points. Tarboro, which lost two earlier meetings this season to SWE, won its first EPC game in 10 outings, improving to 4-16 overall. SW EDGECOMBE (62) Whitaker 14, Bandy 18, Jones 7, Moody 6, Hinton 11, Williams 6. TARBORO (76) Bryant 2, Smith 13, Johnson 13, K. Jones 23, Shaw 1, B. Jones 6, Hudson 4, White 2, Purvis 12. Score by quarters: SW Edgecombe 13 11 16 22 — 62 Tarboro 15 26 17 18 — 76 |
