CBA beats E. Wayne for ECC tourney title

From staff reports

PIKEVILLE -- The teams and the outcome were reversed for head coach Brad Matthews in Friday night's 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference Tournament championship softball game on Charles B. Aycock High's diamond.

Matthews' CBA squad seized the tournament championship with a 5-1 conquest of Southern Wayne.

A year ago, Matthews coached the Southern Wayne team that lost to CBA in the tournament final.

"It feels really good," Matthews assured. "I know what kind of team (Southern Wayne) has got. Before the season, I was hoping we could just split (two conference games) with them. But to get 2 of 3 from them makes me proud of my girls."

The tournament crown also rewarded CBA (19-4) with the top seed in the playoffs. CBA and Southern Wayne tied for regular-season supremacy.

The Lady Golden Falcons scored twice in the first inning, when senior first baseman Leigh Smith rapped a run-scoring single.

Sophomore second baseman Torie Benton slugged a solo home run in the third inning. The blast cleared the fence in right-center field.

CBA managed seven hits, including a pair from Cara Frederick, who had an RBI.

Lady Falcons' senior left-handed pitcher Emily Jordan outdueled junior Southern Wayne ace Lauren Darden.

Jordan spaced seven hits, walked three and struck out three.

"It feels really good," Matthews said of the tournament championship. "I knew the girls were capable of doing it. Give them credit for playing hard all the time -- they never let up.

"(CBA) lost six starters, but I knew some good players were coming up and they had good pitching."

Improved hitting has Matthews upbeat about the playoffs.

"Emily is not the type pitcher that is going to blow it past (hitters)," Matthews reasoned. "But she's a smart-enough pitcher that, if we score a few runs, we're going to have success."

Score by innings:

Southern Wayne 000 010 0 -- 1

Charles B. Aycock 201 110 x -- 5
