CCS looks for 1st soccer state title

Three spring sports championships in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A ranks will be decided in Wilson for the fourth consecutive year beginning today, weather permitting.

The boys tennis tournament at Barton College Tennis Complex, scheduled to begin this morning at 9, has been pushed back.

Greenfield head coach Will Cobb was optimistic, however, for play today with the forecast calling for gradual clearing this afternoon.

"I think we'll be able to start today," Cobb said.

Greenfield Athletic Director Rob Salter confirmed the girls soccer semifinals at Gillette Athletic Complex and the baseball semifinals in Fleming Stadium should be able to start on time.

Community Christian makes its first appearance in the girls soccer semifinals (or any other sport for that matter) today at 4:30 p.m. at Gillette Athletic Complex. The No. 8-seeded Lady Cyclones meet No. 4 Gaston Day while on an adjacent field No. 3 Faith Christian takes on second-seeded Wayne Country Day.

Fleming Stadium is the site of the baseball championship. Today's semifinals pit top-seeded Lawrence versus No. 5 Faith Christian at 1 p.m. and No. 3 Waccamaw against No. 2 Kerr-Vance at 4 p.m. The double-elimination tournament continues with a 7 p.m. game today and action starting Saturday morning at 11.

The Lady Cyclones (11-3) beat their Carolina Christian Conference rival top-seeded Trinity Academy 2-1 with a goal by Auburn Smith in the second sudden-death overtime period Tuesday. Now CCS is two wins away from its first state championship in any sport.

As the host school, Greenfield only has its boys tennis players participating in this weekend's action but the Knights hope to claim several championships in the open-flighted tournament.

Senior John Dandanell went 7-0 in singles play and won the Coastal Plains Independents Conference championship at the No. 5 spot at Greenfield last weekend. Dandanell teamed with Clayton Stakes to win No. 2 doubles in the CPIC Tournament for their seventh win in as many matches.

Those were the only conference titles won by Greenfield but Cobb said several runners-up finishes left him encouraged about the state tournament.

Dandanell, Stakes, Robert Daniel, Mitchell Sheets and Cameron Homes were named to the All-CPIC team.
