Wilson Christian's Sara Treadwell (19) slides to take the ball from Gospel Light ...

Lady Chargers move into championship match on PKs

Wilson Christian goalkeeper Morgan Lewis had done a superb job for 110 minutes.

But when it came down to the nitty gritty, head coach Luke Poore called in his closer.

Taylor Moore moved from her sweeper position to stop two penalty kicks and lift Wilson Christian past Gospel Light of Walkertown in the semifinals of the N.C. Christian School Association 3-A girls soccer playoffs Friday night at Wilson Christian.

The teams tied 1-1, but the Lady Chargers won the shootout 3-0 to earn the right to face Wake Christian at noon.

Wilson Christian's Katie Lamm drilled her shot into the bottom left corner of the net to begin the shootout and Moore followed by stopping Kathryn Hicks' shot to put the momentum firmly on the Lady Chargers' side.

Courtney Peacock then drilled her penalty kick and Moore preserved the two-goal advantage with a leaping save of Erin Lyon's shot.

"I've been practicing on penalty kicks for a while but I was praying the whole time," Moore said. "I have never done penalty kicks in a game before. It was definitely the longest game I've ever played."

Sara Treadwell made it a perfect 3 for 3 for WCA and the final Gospel Light player hooked her shot wide left to secure the win for the Lady Chargers, who are seeking their third NCCSA championship in five seasons.

"The adrenaline was just pumping so hard," Treadwell said. "I've gone to (penalty kicks) before and I just tried to tell the girls to stay calm."

The Lady Chargers (7-4-2) dominated, outshooting Gospel Light 26-7, but could not come up with a goal after Lamm's unassisted tally 20 minutes into the match.

"All year long we've controlled games and just can't put it in the net," Poore said. "We're going to be dead (tired) tomorrow, but at least we got this one."

Gospel Light (12-3-2) will face Salem Baptist in the consolation game today at 10 a.m.

Poore kept Moore on the field at sweeper because he had confidence in Lewis, but when the pressure-packed situation arose he went with his best.

"Taylor's my best goalie," Poore said. "Morgan Lewis is a good goalie too, but Taylor has been trained by her dad ever since she was a little girl and she's started for us most of the year."

Lewis was more than fine with the decision.

"I didn't want to do it," she said. "I would have been so nervous."

"It was a tough battle and both teams gave it their all," said Gospel Light head coach Anthony Carpenter. "I wish Wilson Christian the best in the championship."
