BERTIE -- Beddingfield's softball season came to an end Tuesday at the hands of host Bertie in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs.

The Lady Bruins rallied for two runs in the sixth inning to tie the score only to see the Lady Falcons push across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh of the 3-2 final.

Lady Panthers win first-round thriller vs. Topsail

KENLY -- North Johnston needed two-outs rallies in the seventh and eighth innings before pulling out a 3-2 victory against visiting Topsail in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoffs Tuesday night.

The Lady Panthers, the No. 1 seed from the Carolina Conference, improved to 13-8 and will play at Pender County next. Topsail, the No. 3 team from the Coastal Plains Conference departed 12-8.

"We really played an ugly game at times, particularly on offense and made a couple of mental defensive mistakes which allowed them to score both of their runs," Lady Panthers head coach George Daniels said. "However, we were not short of heart and did what we had to do pull out a win and advance to the second round."

Sarah Wood tripled in the tying run in the eighth inning then raced home with the winning run on Mindy Narron's grounder. The runs erased a costly error in the top of the inning.

The Lady Panthers scored their first run In the seventh on Kayla Whitley's two-out, two-strike singles, bringing in Amber Weaver, who had doubled.

CBA season ends after losing lead at W. Brunswick

SHALLOTTE -- A season that exceeded expectations ended in disappointing fashion for the Charles B. Aycock baseball team Tuesday at West Brunswick.

The Golden Falcons, defending state 3-A champions, couldn't hold a seven-run lead as they lost 9-8 in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs.

Aycock, which lost seven starters from a year ago, finished 19-7 as the No. 2 seed from the Eastern Carolina Conference.

"It's been one of the most satisfying years in my 18-year career here," said CBA head coach Charles Davis. "With everyone we lost from last year, we were supposed to finish fourth in our conference."

After two innings, the Falcons had charged to a 7-0 lead on the Trojans (20-6), the top seed from the split 3-A/4-A Mideastern Conference.

Sophomore Connor Narron belted a two-run home run in the first inning and had an RBI double in the five-run second. Also driving in runs in the second were Tyler Ruffin and Jordan Carr.

Davis said the Falcons missed adding to their lead in the third and fourth innings.

West Brunswick's Josh Powell slugged a three-run homer in the fith following a two-out error by CBA. Another miscue aided a three-run sixth as the Trojans took an 8-7 lead.

Aycock tied in the top of the seventh on Carr's sacrifice fly but the Trojans scored the winning run on a bloop single following a controversial balk call on CBA reliever Jesse Randolph in the bottom of the inning.

"It's a tough pill to swallow but it's been a very satisfying year," Davis said.

Aycock careers concluded for seniors Carr, Randolph, Zach Wright, Bryant Hill, Stephen Strouse and Jackson Wooten.

Lady Cyclones advance to NCISAA 1-A semifinals

RALEIGH -- The Community Christian girls soccer team is coming home.

The Lady Cyclones will play in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A semifinals at Gillette Athletic Complex after defeating host Trinity Academy in a 2-1 thriller Tuesday.

With 10 seconds remaining in the second five-minute, golden-goal overtime period, senior Auburn Smith slammed in a direct kick following a penalty to break a 1-1 deadlock and push CCS into its first state semifinals appearance.

"She hit an absolute missile," CCS head coach Rhine Sharp said of Smith, who had been plagued by leg cramps.

Smith's shot ended a match that was sent to extra time when Trinity got the equalizing goal with five minutes to play.

That erased a 1-0 lead that CCS had held for 60 minutes of play after Jessica Daley buried a cross from junior Caroline Sharp in the 15th minute.

Sharp credited his defense of front of goalkeeper Lindsey Baldridge, who had 12 saves. Shoring up that effort was Graysen Smith, Mollie Baldridge, Kelly Barnes, Katelyn Lemes and Kathryn Smith.

The Lady Cyclones (11-3), who lost to Trinity in the Carolina Christian Conference Tournament last week, will play Gaston Day at 4 p.m. Friday. In the other semfinal, Faith Christian meets Wayne Country Day, also at 4.
