Langley leads area 3-A contingent at regional By Paul Durham | Sports Editor Several track and field athletes in The Wilson Daily Times readership area sport high hopes for a bid to the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A championship meet in Greensboro next weekend. But the only way to do that is with a top-four finish Saturday at the 3-A East Regional championship at Nash Central High School. Leading the list of ladies is Southern Nash's multi-threat Laura Langley, the defending 3-A high jump queen. This spring, Langley has equaled her championship leap 5 feet, 8 inches a year ago. She is closely pursued by NEW 6 Conference rival Jasmine Williams of Nash Central, who has jumped 5-7. But Langley, who has signed with Western Carolina University, isn't limited to the high jump as she enters the regional with the second-best showing in the triple jump at 34-6 and the pole vault at 8-6. Junior Denise Harrison of SouthWest Edgecombe brings the the best shot put with a heave of 35-4.5. Langley's Ladybirds teammate Miranda Johnson enters with the second-best time in the 1,600-meter run. But Johnson's school-record time of 5:24.38 is well behind defending 3-A champion Ryanna Henderson of Jacksonville, who has run the 1,600 in 5:10. Johnson will also compete in the 800 and 3,200 runs. The latter is the only event entered by Fike senior Laura Hanson, who finished second in the 1,600 and 3,200 at last year's regional meet. "It's just how well she can deal with the pain," said Fike head coach Tom Griffith, who hopes to have several of his boys qualify for the state meet. Golden Demons senior Kevin Smith comes in with the best time in the 400 dash at 50.29. Smith also runs anchor on the 4x400 relay, one of severalF Fike units hoping for a big day at Nash Central. "I think we have a realistic possibliity of getting all four relay teams in," Griffith said, while pointing out that a fourth-place finish was as good as a first Saturday. Beddingfield's best hopes reside with sophomore long jumper Terry Davis (22-1) and senior sprinter Chris Taylor in the 100 (10.89). The Bruins boast strong candidates in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. Cameron George of Charles B. Aycock tops the pole vault candidates with a height of 12-7. The NEW 6 should offer some of the best duels Saturday as Rocky Mount's Jacobi Jenkins and Danny Allen of Nash Central will go head-to-head in the 110 high hurdles while Northern Nash's Zack Brantley and Dillon Hawley of Nash Central will square off in the 1,600 and 3,200. "Our conference is pretty much going to have its way Saturday," Griffith said. The field events get underway at 11 a.m. with the preliminary track events starting around noon and the finals set for approximately 2:30 p.m. paul@wilsontimes.com | 265-7808
