NCHSAA playoff action intensifies this evening
Playoff action heats up once again tonight at area high schools.
Highlighting tonight's home slate of N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A state playoff matchups will be the Hunt girls soccer team (21-2) hosting Jacksonville (15-6-1) in the third round, while the Fike baseball team (19-4) welcomes Triton (16-7) in the second round.
The Lady Warriors, coming off a 2-1 overtime thriller victory against Gray's Creek, are making their first trip into the third round since 1999 and will kick off at 6. The Golden Demons, who beat Eastern Almance 8-0 in the first round, start at 7 at Fike.
In opening the 3-A softball playoffs, C.B. Aycock (19-4) hosts Northeast Guilford (12-13) at 8 while in 2-A action, Greene Central (16-8) welcomes Roanoke Rapids (10-8) at 7. In the 1-A division, North Johnston (12-8) takes on visiting Topsail (12-7). Also at 7.
On the road, the Hunt baseball team (16-9) travels to D.H. Conley (15-9), and defending state champion Charles B. Aycock (19-6) visits West Brunswick (19-6). North Johnston (13-6), from the 1-A ranks, will meet East Columbus (13-8). The second-round games begin at 7.
All three Wilson County softball teams hit the road for their opening playoff games. Beddingfield (7-9) visits Bertie (14-8) at 5, Hunt (15-7) at Currituck (12-8) at 6, and Fike (8-12) at Southern Alamance (21-5) at 7.
In second-round tennis, Southern Nash (23-0) aims to avenge its loss against host Burlington Williams (12-4) in last year's playoffs when the teams meet again today. C.B. Aycock (19-2) travels to D.H. Conley (15-4), while North Johnston visits Topsail (11-10). All three matches are at 4.
In the first round of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs, eighth-seeded Community Christian (10-3) visits top-seeded Trinity Christian of Raleigh (12-2) today at 4.
