NCHSAA playoffs hit fever pitch Playoff fever continues to rise in the N.C. High School Athletic Association this weekend. The 3-A state track championship meet will be held today in Greensboro while a half-hour away in Burlington, the boys tennis individual tournament will be going on. Athletes from The Wilson Daily Times readership area will be at both locations while a pair of other playoff contests will be going on closer to home. Fike High School will be the scene of the 3-A baseball third-round playoff game between the Golden Demons and South Granville, beginning at 7 p.m. The Hunt softball team visits South Central for a second-round 3-A playoff tilt, also at 7. The Demons (20-4) are the last remaining baseball team in the NCHSAA playoffs from The Wilson Daily Times readership area. Fike, the No. 1 seed from the NEW 6 Conference, will have its hands full against the Vikings (21-5), champions of the Mid-State Conference. The Hunt softball team heads to Winterville to play South Central in tonight's second round of the 3-A playoffs. The first pitch is at 7. The Lady Warriors (16-7) are the final area softball team still in the NCHSAA playoffs. Hunt, the No. 3 seed from the Eastern Carolina Conference, takes on the mighty Lady Falcons (20-2), the champion of the split 3-A/4-A Coastal Conference. At Burlington Tennis Center, three singles players and three doubles teams will be seeking state glory in the 3-A tournament. Vail drew Lake Norman's Trey McKee as his first-round opponent today. He will be joined by Beddingfield senior Martin Wdowiak, who bowed to Vail in the East semifinals last weekend at Barton College Tennis Complex. Wdowiak, an exchange student from Argentina, will meet Hickory's Luke Synn in the first round. Southern Nash senior Michael Barnes takes on Asheville T.C. Roberson's Jacob Wright in his first match. The Firebirds double tandem of Nicolas Finet-Kyle Ramsey will battle Roberson's Brooks Frederick-Brandon Hoge in the first round. Also taking the court will be CBA's Addison Westbrook-Blake Cooper against Gastonia Forestview's Brandon Rouse-Ross Wilson. Aycock's Ben Evans-Dylan Quinn drew Luke Gillis-Tripp Hawkins in the first round. Play began this morning at 10 with two rounds scheduled for today with the semifinals and championship to be held Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. CORRECTION Four more track athletes from Southern Nash High School will be a part of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A championship meet today in Greensboro. The 3,200-meter relay team of Tyler Turner, Joseph Thompson, Josh Harris and Caleb Deese was inadvertently omitted from the story on the 3-A championship meet in Thursday's edition of The Wilson Daily Times. The Firebirds foursome posted a qualifying time of 8 minutes, 42 seconds at Saturday's 3-A East Regional. The Daily Times regrets the oversight and any resulting confusion or inconvenience.
