Tennis championships unkind to area players BURLINGTON -- Friday was not a memorable day for area competitors in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A varsity boys tennis tournament at the Burlington Tennis Center. Three singles players and three doubles teams all lost first round matches, including East Region singles champion Blake Vail of Charles B. Aycock. Vail lost to Lake Norman's Trey McKee 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (2) in a match that took over 3 and 1/2 hours to complete. McKee, the No. 4 seed from the West, also went on to upset Charles Wolbers of Sun Valley, the Midwest runner-up. Beddingfield's Martin Wdowiak lost in three sets to West Region champ Luke Synn of Hickory and Michael Barnes of top-ranked Southern Nash bowed out in straight sets to T.C. Roberson's Jacob Wright. In doubles action, Aycock's Ben Evans-Dylan Quinn and Addison Westbrook-Blake Cooper both fell in straight sets. Also losing was the Southern Nash duo of Nicolas Finet and Kyle Ramsey. Michael Barnes (Southern Nash) 6-1, 6-3. First Round Luke Gillis-Tripp Hawkins (Statesville) def. Ben Evans-Dylan Quinn (CBA) 6-0, 6-0; Brandon Rouse-Ross Wilson (Gastonia Forestview) def. Addison Westbrook-Blake Cooper (CBA) 6-3, 6-1; Brooks Frederick-Brandon Hoge (T.C. Roberson) def. Nicolas Finet-Kyle Ramsey (Southern Nash) 6-4, 6-1.
