Wilson Christian to host NCCSA 3-A championships
For the third time in the past four years, Wilson Christian Academy will be the site of the N.C. Christian School Association 3-A state championships.
Beginning Friday afternoon, the Airport Road campus will be the scene of girls soccer, softball and baseball championships and Wilson Christian is in the hunts for all three titles.
The semifinals begin Friday afternoon and Championship Saturday begins with consolation games at 10 a.m. followed by the finals at noon for girls soccer and 12:30 p.m. for softball and baseball.
The girls soccer team of Lady Chargers head coach Luke Poore is seeking its third NCCSA 3-A crown, having won both previous times WCA hosted the finals in 2004 and 2006.
Wilson Christian (6-4-2), the No. 2 seed from the East Region, will meet West Region No. 1 seed Gospel Light in the first semifinal Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. Wake Christian, the East No. 1, takes on Salem Baptist, the West No. 2, in the nightcap at 6 p.m.
The WCA softball program has not won a state crown in fast-pitch softball, although it did win state titles in the slow-pitch era. The Lady Chargers (5-9) just missed being state champions as tournament hosts in 2006.
The softball final four is an East Region shootout as No. 4 seed Wilson Christian, coached by Desiree Brewer, takes on No. 1 Wilmington Christian in the second semifinal, Friday at 7 p.m. Wake Christian, the second seed, meets No. 3 Raleigh Christian at 4:30 p.m.
The Chargers baseball team, coached by Ty Bissett, hopes to win its first state title as the Chargers (11-6) enter as the East No. 2 seed. The semifinals foe for WCA in Friday's second game at 7:30 p.m. will be West No. 1 Vandalia Christian of Greensboro.
Wilson Christian Athletic Director Malcolm Deans said the Chargers' best finish was as runner-up in 1986.
Wake Christian, the East No. 1, tangles with West No. 2 Gospel Light at 4:30 p.m.
In all sports, the East teams hold the home-team in case of equal seeds meeting.
